What we’re about
This group will go on day hikes and overnight camping trips. Suitable for anyone who is keen on adventure, likes a bit of exercise and looking to meet new people.
The main organiser carries a personal locator beacon on all hikes and is a certified Trained First Aider, so you can feel comfortable coming out with us. Safety is always key. Please look at the difficulty rating for each hike as we will do easy hikes for beginners, medium hikes for those with a bit more experience and some more challenging hikes for those who want to test themselves :)
Upcoming events (3)
See all- Day 1 - Whangarei Heads overnight hike (Te Whara and Mt Lion tracks)Ocean Beach Carpark, Whangarei
Day 1 of a weekend at Whangarei Heads with overnight camping / cabin stay. A challenging but very rewarding hike from Ocean Bay Beach along Mt Lion and Te Whara tracks before returning by Peach Cove track. There are some extremely long steep uphill sections including lots of steps - the tracks are in good condition but muddy in parts with tree roots to navigate and some rocky sections to scramble over. This is a stunning part of Northland with amazing views and interesting terrain. No stream crossings.
*please note, start/finish times for the event include travel time to/from Auckland. Start time of the hike is 9:30am.
Also, this weekend is daylight savings so remember that we lose 1 hour Saturday night! Don't miss the hike because you forgot to allow for daylight savings :)This hike can be attended as either a day hike or overnight trip with a shorter, slightly easier hike planned for Day 2. Details for Day 2 will be posted shortly. Please make sure you RSVP to both events if you are planning to come for the weekend.
Suggest staying at Whangarei TOP 10 Holiday Park which has both campsites to put your tent up on or a variety of cabins. You could get together with other people in the group to share a cabin or book a combined site to put up 2 tents. Suggest putting this in comments section if you are keen. Whangarei TOP 10 Holiday Park & Camping To avoid disappointment make sure you book your accommodation early.
Important: this hike is only open to people who have been out with the group at least once and don't struggle with a 3 rated hike. Alternatively if you hike regularly with other groups and feel confident you can keep up with the group for the duration you are also welcome to join. Anyone who is struggling after the first step climb will be asked to return to the carpark and not continue with the group.
