Each session of this class offers to teach you a different beginner-friendly element of Portuguese knitting. This five-session series offers each class as a standalone option, so you can register for as many sessions as fit your schedule or interests!
The Portuguese knitting method involves holding the yarn in front of you attached to a necklace or pin, or around your neck. This is an easy-to-learn method that is faster and easier on the hands than conventional knitting. Each class will assume that you are a beginning knitter (although experienced knitters who want to learn a new method are welcome).
Class curriculum:
1/13: Casting on and knitting
1/20: Purling and casting off
1/27: Increasing and decreasing
2/3: Cabling
2/10: How to read a knitting chart; blocking & sewing pieces together
All materials will be provided by your instructor or by Catalyst, including:
- Size 8 needles
- Yarn
- Portuguese knitting necklaces (for you to keep and take home!)
Optional to bring:
- Your own yarn or needles, if you prefer to use them
About your instructor:
Morgaine learned how to knit in Girl Scouts at age 10, but put it aside until age 35, when she and her partner were homesteading in Arizona. She came across the classic Mary Thomas's Knitting Book at the local small town public library, and taught herself how to knit socks. When the internet came into being, she discovered she could learn advanced techniques from videos online.
Ages 11+ are welcome! Registration is $20. Register here: https://www.catalystartscollaborative.com/service-page/beginner-portuguese-knitting-tue-2pm
