North Shore Trail is a quiet 7.6-mile out-and-back hike that follows the shoreline of Ralph Price Reservoir. To reach the trail, park at the Button Rock trailhead, and follow the main roadway to a prominent intersection near the second vault toilet. Proceed right and climb a steep hill next to the Button Rock Dam spillway. After 1.4 miles, you will reach a signed driveway for the ranger station. Continue up the driveway, pass the station, and descend to the shoreline of Ralph Price Reservoir. The trail is mostly level except for a steep traverse on rock and dirt in Rattlesnake Gulch. North Shore Trail follows the shoreline for several miles to a large meadow on the west side of the preserve. Turnaround here for a moderate out-and-back hike. Please be aware that dogs, camping, and swimming are prohibited in the protected watershed and a special City of Longmont permit is required to fish Ralph Price Reservoir. However, the hike is a true hidden gem and you will see few hikers once you reach the shoreline.
