Are they really the same thing?
Today, many artists write, record, produce, upload, perform and promote their own songs — but does that automatically make them professional songwriters?
And where does that leave the traditional songwriter who writes songs for OTHER artists?
Understanding the difference can make of break your songwriter's potential. In this eye-opening workshop, award-winning songwriter and mentor Jacques M. Gentil explores the often misunderstood difference between:
• Singer-songwriters
• Professional songwriters
• Recording artists
• Producers
• Topliners
• Lyricists
• Commercial writersWe’ll discuss:
🎤 Writing for yourself vs writing for the industry
🎤 Why some great singers are weak songwriters
🎤 Why many successful songwriters never perform publicly yet make the bucks
🎤 Collaboration in modern songwriting
🎤 The rise of the independent artist
🎤 The difference between “performing songs” and “crafting songs”
🎤 How the music business sees these roles
🎤 Why this distinction matters more than ever todayWhether you are:
• an aspiring songwriter,
• an indie artist,
• a singer-songwriter,
• or simply curious about how the industry really works…
…this session will challenge the way you think about songwriting.🎵 IMPORTANT RSVP UPDATE

15 JULY: WRITING RADIO HITS vs ALBUM SONGS
·OnlineOnline🎵 MAGESONGS SONGWRITING SERIES (ONLINE)
JULY SESSION (Free)
WRITING RADIO HITS vs ALBUM SONGS
(Mainstream vs Non-Mainstream Songwriting)Why do some songs instantly connect with millions, while others become hidden gems loved only by devoted listeners?
Not every song is written for the same purpose.
Some songs are crafted to grab attention quickly through memorable hooks, simplicity, and emotional immediacy. Others are written to deepen an album, explore artistic ideas, or create a more intimate emotional journey. In this month’s Magesongs Songwriting Series workshop, award-winning songwriter Jacques Gentil explores the important differences between mainstream songwriting and non-mainstream writing, including:
• Why some songs immediately feel “radio friendly”
• The importance of hooks and repetition
• Simplicity vs complexity in songwriting
• Radio structure vs artistic freedom
• Why some beautiful songs never become hits
• Commercial writing vs authentic writing
• Writing for yourself vs writing for artistsWhether you write pop, country, worship, ballads, folk, rock, or deeply personal songs, this session will help you better understand the direction and purpose behind your writing.
