What we’re about

Hello Wonderful Dancers!
Welcome new and seasoned flashmobbers to Shall We Dance's 5th flash mob!

A flash mob, for those who are unfamiliar with the concept, is a planned performance that appears to be spontaneous and therefore has a wonderful surprise element to it. Anyone who enjoys dance is welcome. The purpose of the event is to bring the community together through the joy of dance.

We will be learning and practicing three dances for the next two months to prepare for a flash mob performance on Saturday, October 11th at 11:00 AM. The reason for the earlier time is to avoid a heat wave, which we experienced last October.
There will now be two practice groups. Caren will lead the Napa group and Sangeeta will lead a Concord group. The reason for this change is so that dancers living outside the Napa area will be able to attend practice sessions with more ease. All dancers are welcome to either or both groups.

We will perform three line dances:

  1. Chocolate City Hustle (to the song Old Time Rock&Roll), 2) My Paradise (to the song Isle of Paradise) and 3) Uptown Funk in that order.

We will perform all three dances in three locations in downtown Napa that are in walking distance of each other.

Actual Flash Mob Event, Saturday, October 11th 11:00 AM
(Always feel free to wear what ever you're comfortable dancing in. For those who choose to, we are considering an accessory or style of clothing as a visual unifier TBA)

  1. First we'll meet up at 11:00 AM
near Napastak, 1240 First Street, Napa, CA
Between the Makers Market and Napastak (Where Randolph St. dead ends into First St.)
    We'll begin dancing at 11:10.
2)Secondly, we'll walk to Dwight Murray Plaza, 1126 First Street, for the second performance. Dwight Murray Plaza is on First St. between Main St. and Coombs St.
3)Thirdly, we'll walk to Veteran's Memorial Park, 800 Main St. for the third performance, followed by picture taking by the river:) Veteran's Memorial Park is on the corner of Main and Third Streets.
  2. If you'd like, we can go to Downtown Joe's for a refreshment after, to celebrate our success!
Please find the in person practice schedule as well as links to samples of the dances and instructional videos below. We find that while the in person practice is beneficial, lots of home practice is needed to develop the muscle memory for the steps.
  3. Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock & Roll" was released in1979. The song was initially written by George Jackson and Thomas Earl Jones III, but Seger's vocal and lyrical contribution significantly shaped the final product.
The song is Old Time Rock&Roll. The dance is referred to as Chocolate City Hustle or Old Time Rock&Roll.
Note: The videos for this dance show some variations. You can choose when and if you do a turn or a step behind step tap.
