Book discussion: Death and the Dervish by Meša Selimović
Details
Our next book discussion is on Death and the Dervish (Ch. 1–3) by Meša Selimović.
Meša Selimović (1910–1982) was a Bosnian novelist, widely recognized as one of the central figures of 20th-century Yugoslav literature.
His celebrated novel Death and the Dervish (1966) is set in Ottoman-era Bosnia. The first half of the book (Part I) consists mainly of the internal monologue of Sheikh Nuruddin, who reflects on his doubts, fears, and the nature of power and justice.
There is little plot development in Part I — it's mostly philosophical reflection — so as an experiment we will just read chapters 1–3 (Part I) for our discussion.
NB: If you go further into the book, please be mindful not to reveal any spoilers during the discussion.
