ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS

A young Illinois backwoodsman (Raymond Massey) marries a woman from the Kentucky elite (Ruth Gordon) and rises to the American Presidency.

John Cromwell directed this 1940 production from a Grover Jones adaptation of Robert Sherwood's 1938 play. (Massey had played the role on Broadway.) The result was a commercial failure, but popular in Illinois.
