What we’re about
Welcome to Humanists Australia!
Humanism is a non-religious life stance that values compassion, reason, democracy and human rights. Are you a humanist? To find out, take the How Humanist Are You? quiz or ask us at one of our Meetups.
Our Meetups are a safe space for engaging in discussion. With us, you can voice your opinion, and have your views heard and respected. You can feel free to challenge the ideas that are put forward, and engage in robust discussion about them. We ask you to treat each other with mutual respect and consideration. While debating the ideas, there is no place here for criticism of people. We speak respectfully to each other, even when we disagree.
Humanists Australia welcomes all humanists, and others who are interested in learning about humanism and discussing topics related to humanism, to this Meetup.
Those who come to our Meetups are asked to adhere to the Humanists Australia Code of Conduct. We do not allow harassment of any kind, or promotion of any goods, services or groups unrelated to humanism (except by prior permission of the organisers).

See all- The Hidden Toll of Religious TraumaLink visible for attendees
A clear picture has begun to emerge in the field of mental health of the toll that certain harmful, high-control religious practices can take. In 2011, Dr. Marlene Winell coined the term "Religious Trauma Syndrome" to give a name to the unique trauma that many former and current religious adherents face from their experiences. Join us for the first presentation of this five part series, where we'll begin to shed a light on the hidden toll of religious trauma that can last even years after leaving.

Book Club: In the Desert: Jimmy Pike as a Boy, by Pat Lowe
It’s okay to attend if you haven’t finished the book, but spoilers will not be avoided. We hope you will try to get through at least some of the book, though, as it makes for a better discussion.
Jimmy Pike is one of Australia's most famous Aboriginal artists, represented in collections in all major Australian public galleries and museums. He grew up in the Great Sandy Desert during the 1940s and 1950s.
This is his story as told by his lifetime partner, English-born Pat Lowe, who spent three years in the desert with him, and many more years listening to his stories. This remarkable and intimate account of what was a traditional Walmajarri boyhood, one of the last of its kind, opens your eyes to a completely different culture and way of experiencing the world. The startling fact is that after 60,000 years following a nomadic, hunter-gatherer way of life, the exodus of the Walmajarri people from the desert occurred in only one or two generations after white settlement.
