T is for 'Turner in Twickenham!' Turner’s House & Twickenham Museum
Details
An Afternoon Exploring Turner’s Connections in Twickenham!
We'll start at SandyCombe Lodge - Turner’s House.
At Sandycombe Lodge our aim has been to create the quiet, domestic space that Turner used as his retreat from the London art world. The architecture of this little building is quirky, reflecting Turner’s own designs but also the influence of his good friend, John Soane, and is worth close attention. Turner made many sketches before arriving at his final design, and these are now brought together in a facsimile sketchbook.
Many rich stories have emerged during our researches into the years Turner spent at Sandycombe, such as those relating to the Napoleonic wars. Some of the beautiful etchings from his Liber Studiorum are on display here, several of them of them responding to those troubled years when England was under threat of invasion, along with beautifully crafted models of ships, variations on those which Turner had here.
(ACCESS NEEDS - Unfortunately due to the limitations of the historic house, no lift facilities are available. The ground floor of the house is fully accessible, and a tablet device will be available for a virtual visit to the first floor and basement.)

GETTING THERE:
Sandycombe Lodge, 40 Sandycoombe Road, Twickenham TW1 2LR
BY CAR: As this is a residential area, we advise avoiding travel by car where possible. There is no parking on Sandycoombe Road or Turner’s House premises. Alternatively, volunteers and visitors can park in Marble Hill Car Park for £2.50 up to 2 hours.
BY TRAIN: Mainline & Overground/Underground (District Line) trains all run to Richmond station. The nearest train station is St Margarets, a short walk away.
BY BUS: From Richmond station, the H37 and 110 stop at Sandycoombe Road. Frequent services also run on the 33/490 /R70/R68 where you should alight at Marble Hill Park/Crown Rd stop. It is then a 3 minute walk.
ON FOOT
From Richmond cross the bridge and walk on Richmond Rd, continuing on St Margarets Rd, for a half mile. You will find Sandycoombe Rd on the left. If you prefer a more panoramic walk (similar to Turner’s footsteps), take the riverside tow path after Richmond bridge which leads you into Marble Hill Park, cross the park towards the Richmond Road’s gate and you will find Sandycoombe Rd at the traffic lights across the road. It is then a 3 minute walk.
EVENT WHATSAPP GROUP If you are on the 'Going' list, please join the event WhatsApp group to help you find the group on the day, which is really helpful for the host! The link will be shared in the Event Comments below at least 48 hours before the event. Joining this WhatsApp group will make your phone number visible to other members in the group.
IMPORTANT NOTE
* LoMAZ events are run by volunteers. We have an attendee limit to help the host manage the event. We prefer a smaller, friendlier group.
* Once all the spaces are taken, Meetup adds you to the Waitlist. If someone drops out, waitlisted attendees are automatically moved to the 'Going' list by Meetup in order of priority.
* If you can no longer attend, please change your RSVP to 'Not Going' as soon as possible. Then someone on the waitlist can take your place.
We remove members from the LoMAZ Meetup group who:
* RSVP as ‘Going' but then do not show up three times in a row.
* RSVP as ‘Going' but then change their RSVP to 'No' five times in a row.
* Are on the Waitlist or who have not RSVPd, but turn up anyway.
Thank you! From the LoMAZ Admin Team
