About us
LoMAZ is a friendly, diverse and inclusive group of people who enjoy visiting museums, bookended by a trip to a café and a pub. The group is for Gen X and Millennials who were born in the years 1965-1996. If you like history, exploring places and meeting people, please come along.
Our events are run by a group of volunteers who maintain a full calendar catering to a wide range of tastes and interest. Our events include:
- Our regular museum events, which have an attendee limit as we prefer smaller, friendlier groups where people can get to know each other.
- Our bi-monthly 'Unlimited' museum events, where we have no attendee limit and we explore just one room in a museum, followed by a pub social.
- Our monthly 'Lates For Dates' museum event, which - unlike our other events - is for singles only. This is typically on the last Friday of the month and has no attendee limit. It is a mixed orientation event for straight and LGBTQI+ singles born between 1965-1996.
How does LoMAZ work?
Our regular museum events:
For each event, we meet in a nearby café 30-45 minutes earlier. We then go to the museum/exhibition, where you are free to wander around at your own pace. Afterwards, we head to a nearby pub for a social chit-chat. The café and pub social are optional, so it’s fine if you just prefer to join us for the museum visit.
Each event listing will give you all the details, plus an event WhatsApp group you can join to help you find the group.
Tickets:
If a museum/exhibition has an entry fee, you’ll need to buy your own ticket. Each event will tell you whether you need to buy this in advance and provide the ticket link.
Event attendee limit:
Our regular LoMAZ events have an attendee limit per event because we prefer a smaller, friendlier group where members can get to know each other. It also helps the host manage the event and organise the pub bookings.
If an event is full, you'll be added to the waitlist. If someone drops out, waitlisted members are automatically moved into the ‘Going’ list in order of priority.
Rules & Etiquette:
To ensure everyone gets a fair chance, we ask that you observe these points of etiquette:
- If you can no longer attend an event, please change your RSVP to "No" as soon as possible. This frees up a space for someone on the waitlist.
- Only attend if you're on the ‘Going’ list. Do not turn up if you are on the waitlist.
- Only join the event WhatsApp group if you are on the ‘Going’ list, not the waitlist.
We remove members from the LoMAZ Meetup group who:
- RSVP as ‘Going' to our regular events but then do not show up three times in a row.
- RSVP as ‘Going' to our regular events but then change their RSVP to 'No' five times in a row.
- Turn up at an event without being on the 'going' list (i.e. members who have not signed up or are on the waitlist).
Responsibility disclaimer:
By signing up to an event you acknowledge that:
1. You are attending at your own risk and accept full responsibility for anything that may happen to you.
2. You will not hold responsible, nor pursue any legal, injury or financial compensation claim against LoMAZ or the host for anything that may happen to you during the event.
Our group is committed to creating a respectful and safe inclusive environment for all members. Any form of discrimination, harassment, or disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated.
Respectful Communication Rule:
To maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, members must not send excessive or unsolicited private messages—especially to people they haven’t met in person at an event. This includes repeated messages without a response or contacting multiple members in a short period. If we receive reports of such behaviour, it may lead to a warning or immediate removal from the group, depending on the severity. Our goal is to ensure all members feel comfortable and respected.
Best wishes,
The Admin Team

T is for Thames River Police Museum (Wapping)
Thames River Police Museum, Wapping Police Station, Wapping High Street, London, GBJohn Burns, the trade unionist once famously said of London’s river "Every drop is liquid history".
In 1798 a newly formed body of police officers brought much needed law and order to that most historic of rivers. The Thames River Police was the first policing body ever to be set up. Its sole objective was the prevention and detection of crime on the Thames and it was to become the forerunner of many other police forces throughout the world.
Join us for a rare entrance into this museum as part of the ‘Wapping Shindig’ community event run by the Turks Head Charity. (Website under construction).
This small museum located at Wapping police station, which for more than two centuries has been the headquarters of the River Police. The museum is housed in the old carpenters workshop and is administered by the Thames Police Association. It gives an insight into the history of the policing of the River Thames.

⛪️ St Peter's Church:
At the entrance to Hever Castle is the parish church of St Peter's where the Boleyn family worshipped, and where Anne Boleyn's father Thomas Boleyn and her baby brother Henry Boleyn are buried. Before we explore the castle Jonny will take the group on a guided tour around the church to explain more about the building and the burials within.🏰 Hever Castle & grounds:
Dating back to the 1300s, Hever Castle was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and Mother of Elizabeth I. It formed the backdrop to tumultuous events that changed the course of Britain’s history, monarchy and religion. Its panelled rooms house fine furniture, tapestries, antiques and ‘one of the best collections of Tudor portraits after the National Portrait Gallery’; Also, two prayer books which belonged to Anne Boleyn and bear her inscriptions and signature.
William Waldorf Astor restored the Castle in the early 20th century. The Astor Suite showcases pictures and memorabilia relating to the Astor family and the Edwardian period. The permanent exhibition in the Long Gallery depicts the saga from the Wars of the Roses to the Reformation through its art collection.

🖼️ The 'Capturing a Queen' exhibition @ Hever Castle brings together the largest ever gathering of portraits believed to depict Anne Boleyn, including a ground-breaking newly identified contemporary image unveiled for the first time.
Developed from new research, the exhibition traces how Anne’s image has changed over 500 years and reveals new scientific findings about Hever’s famous ‘Hever Rose’ portrait. You can examine the evidence and vote for the likeness you believe best represents Henry VIII’s most enigmatic queen.
