Stairs and Beer! (Silver Lake East Urban Hike), Level: Moderate+

Details

Come join us for a challenging workout, for exploring the area and to meet new people to do an urban stair hike in beautiful Silver Lake. Afterwards we'll go to the 60-year-old, German-style Red Lion Tavern a block away for a drink and/or food. You can join us for one or both activities.

RSVP only if doing the hike at 6pm, post a comment if you are only coming to the after-event starting at 8-8.10pm (no attendee limit for this part). The restaurant is so casual that workout clothes will be fine. We will be upstairs or outside (entrance from the top floor) and will probably stay 60-90 minutes. For info and menu: https://www.redliontavern.net

This time we'll start the hike with a 1-mile flat walk along the Reservoir path to warm up. Then we'll conquer the Swan triple, the long Loma Vista, the zig zag, and Ivanhoe double stairs among others. The second half of the hike will be after sunset.

LEVEL: Intermediate Plus for speed, length and overall elevation gain, but many inclines are moderate ++ (strenuous!!!!!) We are a friendly group that loves to socialize and encourage newcomers, but please note that moderate+ cardio fitness and brisk walking speed are required.

LENGTH: 5.2 miles, 11 long staircases up and 7 down, + steep hills. 1000 ft elevation gain, which may be harder than it sounds for those not used to stairs! +/-2 hours for the hike and +/- 3 1/2h for both events.

SPEED: Workout speed, faster than most moderate hikes, but below advanced ones. We take a short pause to re-group at the top of the stairs and the steepest hills. There will be no sweep; bring a phone for navigation just in case you want to leave early.

BRING: Exercise outfit, workout shoes (no hiking shoes needed), and water. Flash light (any color) for the last section if you have one handy.
ID and $$ if joining us at the restaurant.

PARKING: Street parking. Edgewater Terrace has a surprising amount of free, unlimited parking available; stay west of the library to avoid meters.

RESTROOMS and START: We'll do introductions at 6.00pm and start hiking at 6.05pm sharp! Library restrooms have been under renovation, so their availability is unknown. We usually see port-a-potties along the way. (If you are running up to 10-15 minutes late meet us on Silverlake Blvd where Rockford Rd crosses.)

PLEASE NO CRASHING: Urban hikes do not work well with large groups, so, unfortunately, I have to limit the group size. I "overbook" the events in anticipation of some last-minute dropouts, so you cannot assume that those spots are available. The waitlist generally clears in order when spots open up, but people with pictures (LA Hiking Group rule) and good attendance records may get priority.

LIABILITY: The organizer is an unpaid and untrained volunteer. By joining this event each member accepts full responsibility for knowing their limits, for all injuries and health issues, assessing risks, for material losses and for getting lost. Each member agrees to make their guests aware of these policies, also, and release the host from all liability.
