Queer Urban Photography Hike! 📸🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Join us for a relaxed urban hike from Ancoats to Castlefield, exploring Manchester's unique architecture and industrial heritage. This is a space to explore photography with your community and is open to all skill levels, ESPECIALLY beginners and first time dabblers!

• Meeting at Social Refuge at 14:00, the sofa has been reserved downstairs. This seats only 6, currently 12 people are RSVP’d to attend via meet-up, plus potentially some extra. Given the limitations and the fact it’ll be a Saturday, we’ll simply use this as an initial point of reference, rather than a full sit down chatting area.

• Gather outside Social Refuge at 14:30 ready to start

• Head through NQ towards Manchester Craft and Design Centre (via Tib/Oldham St)

• We’ll then head down towards Manchester Central Library (Via Tib/Mosely St)

• We’ll then head to Gay Village via Chinatown

• We’ll then head to Castlefield Basin/Viaduct via the Rochdale Canal Towpath. Last entry to Castlefield Viaduct is 16:30.

• We’ll conclude the walk here, but we’ll head for a pint and social afterwards for anyone that fancies sticking around

At each point, we’ll spend around 10 minutes for photo taking

I’d also like to get a group photo at some point, either Sackville Gardens or Castlefield Basin.

To set some expectations, this our first walk ever, therefore I’d like this to be as relaxed as possible. We may stray off route at times, people will likely have different paces, but as long as we start and end in the same place that’s the main thing.

IMPORTANT:

• Look after yourself and each other, try to stick within small groups of at least 3.

• Your belongings are your own responsibility, be vigilant. We will be navigating past picadilly gardens between NQ and the library, I’d recommend putting your camera away during this section.

• I am not aware of any far right demos happening in Manchester, there is a large one taking place in London so may be potential travellers loitering around, but I think the timing of this walk will miss most of that.

• Street photography is encouraged, but don’t get up in peoples faces.

• Do NOT photograph vulnerable people such as rough sleepers.

WEATHER: light rain forecasted. Dress appropriately and consider weather proofing your camera if it’s not already (there’s plenty of cheap DIY hacks online). I won’t cancel this event, but if the weather is particularly bad on the day, we can decide among us on the day if we still want to do the full walk or stay local

ACCESSIBILITY: The total route is approx 2.5 miles and we will likely encounter steps at certain points, particularly around Castlefield Basin. Annoyingly, one of the lifts to Castlefield Viaduct is broken, so lift access is via Platform 2 at Deansgate Station, a potential plan would be to follow the same route as the tow path on the adjacent main roads towards Deansgate Station. I’m going to scope out the route Monday or Tuesday so I have a better idea of how to do this if we need to. If you need this let me know, I’m happy to work out an alternative walk around with you, even if we have to wing it a bit on the day.

This is not a teaching/learning event, but a safe and non-gatekeeping space to explore photography and the city with your community. You do not require any fancy cameras, bring a simple point and shoot, your phone, or just bring yourself if you’d rather just join in for the walk!
