Here is yet another contemporary redux of Mary Shelley’s “monster who will never die!" Let’s hope it’s as good as Guillermo del Torre’s was. It certainly looks interesting with Maggie Gyllenhaal (Jake’s sister) directing and Christian Bale(!) cast as the monster. Critics have already variously described it is as an "American gothic romance" and a “punk-rock nightmare.”

Update: 03/20/26
O.K. everyone… I’m baaaack. Sorry about the “inconvenient uncertainty” caused by the unexpected – and somewhat surprising – departure of “The Bride!” from the AMC Mountainside 10 which was the originally planned “viewing venue” of this event. I had expected that “The Bride!” would have had “longer legs” (more staying power) and would have still been playing there when I returned from my long trip away. Even the “backup venues” I had planned to “fall back on” in case of this happening all proved to be equally as unreliable – dang! So, after extensive online searching by Cindy, Josh and myself, it appears that the only venue presenting a screening at a time within our acceptable parameters (for viewing, dining and discussion) is the Bellevue Theatre in Montclair which has a screening at 2:00 P.M. So, we’ll go with that as the “official” viewing venue for this event despite the fact that it charges an exorbitant $15 for a regular ticket (no senior discount). As for the venue for the dining and discussion, the only angle I could come up with as a “theme” for this movie (there are no "monster” or “wedding” eateries in the vicinity) was some place with the name “Maggie” in it (for director Maggie Gyllenhaal) and, bingo!, I found Maggie’s Town Tavern (10 Van Ness Ave.) in Little Falls just 3.5 miles away from the Bellevue. Menu looks pretty good and affordable, too.

Now, there is an alternative “unofficial” venue that can be used to view the movie at a more affordable cost. This is the AMC New Brunswick 18 where a regular ticket is $10 and a senior is $8.80. The showtimes are Saturday, March 21 at 11:10 AM and Sunday, March 22 at 10:05 AM. Since it is so "cost effective" and so much in my "neck of the woods," I am going to make use of the Saturday screening and anyone who would like to join me is welcome to do so. This means that Cindy and Josh can host (ride herd on) the viewers at the Bellevue on Sunday and I will arrive at Maggie’s at 4:15 PM to hold down a table for everyone’s arrival at 4:30-45 PM for our dinner and discussion. Now, is that a plan or is THAT a plan?? See y’all on Sunday…

Please note in the comments below if you'll only be joining us for the dinner and discussion.
