"Grave Of The Fireflies" (with post-film Q & A)

(UPDATE: post-screening location moved to D'Agostinos on Addison and Southport)

The Music Box is presenting a celebration of the legendary animation Studio Ghibli's 40th anniversary with a selection of their films, perhaps none as distinctive as "Grave of the Fireflies". Don't let the captivating animation and lovable main two character mislead you - this tale of a Japanese teenager and his younger sister trying to survive in the wake of World War 2 is one of the most emotionally devastating movies ever made, animation or not. Over the course of their journey, there's beauty and horror, whimsy and despair - it's a tour-de-force of movie expression on how the damage effects a country's population long after a wartime conflict has concluded.

After the movie there will be a post-film lecture and Q&A in the theater about the movie and its historical context of post-war Japan, hosted by Professor Yuki Miyamoto (DePaul University), Professor Savneer K. Talwar (SAIC) and Saira Chambers. Following that we'll head to the basement of Dagostinos just south on 1351 W Addison to talk what we thought about the movie and why it's an outlier to the majority of Ghilbli animation. Tickets are $15 and you can pick them up and find more information on the movie at: https://musicboxtheatre.com/films-and-events/grave-of-the-fireflies
