New Humanists Sunday Open House is a gathering for those new to Humanism, seeking to renew Humanism, having new perspectives on Humanism, or making new friendships in a Humanist community.

At these gatherings there'll be conversation and campaigning, partying and philosophising, views and visions. It's a wonderful thing for a Meetup to have its own home so come along and celebrate the opportunity.

Many members of the Meetup profess an interest in discussions, so the big ideas and isms of our age will be a regular theme of our Meetups. We'll also co-operate with members of other Meetups and organisations we share values with.

On 27th January we'll start the year in a big way with a discussion on Feminism & Humanism - and play host to members of the Sydney Feminists Meetup.

At 2.30 p.m. the Feminists will screen an entertaining and thought-provoking film (62 mins.):

I WAS A TEENAGE FEMINIST (2005) is a personal journey into a powerful, political movement that once sparked passionate response and social revolution, but now routinely evokes discomfort, indifference and even disdain.

Armed with a video camera, an inquiring mind, and an irreverent sense of humor, filmmaker Therese Shechter crisscrosses both the continent and her own psyche in the hope of reconnecting to the power and sense of purpose that feminism gave her as a teenager in the 1970s.

After a short break, Tessa Barratt, co-founder of the Sydney Feminists, will give a brief presentation on feminism and humanism. How active are the movements in Australia? Why don’t feminists just call themselves humanists? What is the historical relationship between humanist activism and feminism and does this relationship continue in the same way today?

We can then open up for discussion, questions, and comments with time for everyone to share their thoughts. The discussion can also range over gender issues of all kinds in the skeptical, atheist and freethought movements.

Naturally all genders and shades of opinion will be welcome to share in the day.

There'll also be opportunity for new members to talk about other ideas for meetings in 2013 and to share their notions of Humanism in the 21st century. And time for informal conversation.

Please bring along some food and drink to share and to help enjoy the afternoon.
