This is an easy to moderate 6.5 mile loop trail hike around the Stump Pond at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown.
We will be hiking through the woods over winding trails that can often be "rooty" and occasionally hilly, so shoes with good treads are recommended . We will traverse bridges and boardwalks, pass by running streams and take in some interesting points of interest.
Unfortunately, as we traverse the trail and look to our right through all the beauty of the springtime foliage, we will see the sad devastation of the once beautiful Stump Pond. In August 2024, after 10 inches of torrential downpours, the dam burst and collapsed emptying millions of gallons of water out of Stump Pond and into the Nissequogue River. This catastrophe almost left the pond completely empty. This was a true environmental disaster.
