Garvey Springs then Mt Tammany via Sunfish Pond & Dunfield Creek. 14mi,3,200’

Details

Snapshot:
Intensity: Moderate +
Length: 14 miles
Duration: About 6 hours (Note end times are best estimate)
Pace: Average about 3.2-3.5 mph flat/downhill; slower uphill
Elevation: 3,200 feet

DESCRIPTION:
Join me for a moderate paced challenging "almost summer" conditioning hike. We will start out climbing up the Garvey Springs Trail via the trail next to the waterfalls. The climb is immediate from the parking lot, so be prepared to warm up on the climb. This will knock out our first 500 feet of elevation, followed by another 500 until we reach Sunfish Pond.
We will make our way to the Dunfiled Creek Trail and then the Blue Blaze trail which will take us to the bottom of Mt Tammany. In the hiking world all that goes down must come back up....so you guessed it- we will climb our way back up to the ridge via Mt Tammany and eventually over to the AT and then down the Douglas trail to the parking lot.

As a group we will stop at the very top of Tammany, which is just past the halfway point, for lunch. There is a waterfall on the Dunfield Creek Trail. I am ok with a brief stop here as well if it is a hot day and folks want to cool off for a few. We will pass this spot twice, so can decide as a group which time is best for a splash weather permitting.

GEAR REQUIRED:
1- Proper footwear- hiking boots or trail runners with good grip
2- Appropriate clothing for conditions: layers, wind and rain protection based upon forecast.
3- WATER or other source of hydration; food/snacks as needed and suggested for hikes over 8 miles
4- Electrolytes suggested
5- Hiking poles and backpacks as needed.

WEATHER: All winter hikes are dependent upon safe travel conditions to and from the hiking area. We will hike in existing snow and very light rain. Heavier, cold rain will cancel

PARKING AND MEETING LOCATION: Douglas Parking area at Worthington State Forest Campground. See Meetup PIN for exact spot.

Note: I have only parked in this lot once during the winter. It is not huge, thus the early start time in hopes of beating the crowds. I suggest to plan to meet at 8 with a start time of 8:15am.

GUEST and ATTENDANCE POLICY: All attendees must be members of Outdoor Adventure Friends.
