What we’re about
Philosophy Café is held on the first Sunday of every month from 2-4 pm (times may vary) at (venue as advertised), Brighton . Entry free (donations appreciated, either cash on the day, or via PayPal); pay for your own refreshments and join in with the discussion. The afternoon begins with a brief introduction to the theme. Discussion then follows between groups of those attending. Past experience suggests that the discussion will be animated! Finally, there will then be an opportunity to share thoughts and conclusions with everyone present. This is an opportunity to explore the subjects in a convivial setting including conversation, coffee and cake available from the café. PREVIOUS TOPICS: Creation - an act of love? What is the value of truth? What is reality? Is God real? What is the role of compassion in our lives today? What does it matter whether animals have a soul or not? Do we prefer materialism because it limits us?

Or via PayPal to drdtaylor@btinternet.comIt’s like a philosophy meeting, but instead of debating ONE specific, preset topic, we have about 250 topics, written on cards. We look at the cards.. we pick one topic that everybody likes, we discuss it in turn passing around a token. This way everybody has an equal chance to speak. Then, we read the next card, and so on.
NEW: PLEASE THINK OF SOME TOPICS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS ABOUT AND SEND IT .. WE WILL DISCUSS IT AT THE MEETING...

REMEMBER!!
Between what we think,
what we want to say,
what we believe we say,
what we mean,
what we want to hear,
what we feel,
what we think we understand,
and what we understand,
there are eight possibilities of not understanding each other. - All That's Needed is a Still MindCafe Quench, Hove
Is this so?
When the mind is clear and at rest and the observation is full and free, it is said to be possible to connect with something deeper within oneself. The clutter of ideas, impressions, likes and dislikes, which so often fills the mind, prevents this connection. When that clutter is let go of then the deeper creativity that lies within can rise to the surface.
This description was given by the composer Mozart :
"When I am, as it were, completely myself, entirely alone and of good cheer - say travelling in a carriage or walking after a good meal, or during the night when I cannot sleep - it is on such occasions that my ideas flow best and most abundantly. Whence, and how, they come I know not ; nor can I force them. Those ideas that please me I retain in memory and am accustomed, as I have been told, to hum them to myself. If I continue in this way, it soon occurs to me how I may turn this dainty morsel to account, so as to make a good dish of it. That is to say, agreeable to the rules of counterpoint, to the peculiarities of various instruments etc.All this fires my soul, and, provided I am not disturbed, my subject enlarges itself, becomes methodised, and defined, and the whole, though it be long, stands almost complete and finished in my mind, so that I can survey it like a fine picture or a beautiful statue at a glance. Nor do I hear in my imagination the parts successively, but I hear them, as it were, all at once.
What a delight this is, I cannot tell."
..................Perhaps we don't all have such profound experiences, but what moments of clarity and insight do we have?
Are these insights spontaneous, or is it possible to invoke them?
Or, is stress and being under pressure a better way of inducing those 'eureka' moments?
Discuss!
