How the PMO needs to develop new standards for complex projects

Details
Has the PMBoK, PRINCE2 and other control based guides and methods failed the project management community?
For the past 15 years now there has been a growing body of research focused on utilising the concepts of complex adaptive systems as it relates to project management.
It is possibly too broad a brush but the basic tenet of this research is that project managers should focus on outcomes not outputs and allow their products to emerge as time elapses and as teams adapt.
Traditional control based project management frameworks have established a plethora of tools to track and measure hard aspects of their project including time, cost and quality of products. It has very little within these frameworks to assist with what matters, tracking progress towards outcomes being achieved and benefits realised.
This presentation will outline the case for the project management community to throw away the 9 functions of project management and re-write the guide to the body of knowledge around the principles of managing complex projects and the need to deliver outcomes not just outputs.
Research will be drawn from a range of sources including:
Mark Heath (http://au.linkedin.com/pub/mark-heath/1/a2a/203) experience in completing over 100 assessments across industries including defence, construction, infrastructure, agriculture, FMCG, IT and finance. An extension to the author’s presentation at the 2012 and 2014 AIPM conference on managing global software rollouts without a Gantt chart or a formal project management plan. This rollout has since won several awards both here in globally.
Mark Heath, our presenter, developed UniPhi (http://uniphi.com.au) after consulting to a range of ASX 200 and Fortune 500 companies, as well as major government departments. His passion and focus revolves around commercialising innovative and disruptive technologies – like UniPhi’s project and portfolio management software – to improve his client’s internal processes and returns.
