Preston Ramblers Walking Meetup

Pendle at your pace. Sunday 4th October 2026 10:00 start.

Have you ever wanted to climb Pendle Hill but never tried to? This walk is your opportunity to do just that. We will start from the road leading to Lower Pendle Farm, the nearest point to the foot of the hill and over 450 feet less climb if starting at Barley.

The walk will have a number of experienced leaders in the group so no one will be left to fend for themselve as they make the 600 foot accent up the impressive hill. All the route up is on quality paths and steps, and the way down is on a well used track.

After depending the hill, there will be an option to drop into Barley to have refreshments at the Cabin or make your way back to your car. Dropping into Barley, there is a option to come back to the start by climbing around 450 feet out of the valley, back along the route we dropped down, or a mile or so of road walking back to the car.

The finish time is flexible and it depends on the time taken to climb the hill, there will be no pressure put on anyone to walk faster than the are comfortable doing.

Park on the road, close to the track to the farm

Meet at the carpark with the Hay bales wrapped in black plastic, road B6479. Nearest post code DB24 0EH. Do not turn into Austick Road, Helwith Bridge but bear right... Boots on and ready to leave for 10 am. Expected to finish for 3.30 pm but sometimes walks can get delayed. This is a lovely walk, in a peaceful part if the Yorkshire Dales.. On a clear day we will see the three yorkshire fells, and Ribblehead viaduct.

This is a 10.5 mile walk, split into two halves... the lower level walk we skirt Peny Ghent, but for the fitter walkers you have the option to go up and over Peny Ghent (you must have a good level of fitness to do this aspect)
We all walk together for the first 3 miles at which point the faster group will branch off and climb PG. There is some scrambling before the summit, this path is technical and care must be taken. Over the summit (694m) there are a great number of stone steps to decend. These are irregular, and steep. The scramble and the steps maybe slippy if wet. If the weather is deemed unsuitable for the PG summit the group will follow the lower level walk.

Both groups will meet up at Hull Pot for a 20 minute lunch break. This is the half way mark.

The lower level path starts with a gradual 1 1/2 mile, but gentle, climb to a height of 1312 feet, on a stoney, uneven path. Then descends gently before another gentle climb to Hull pot.

From Hull pot, we all return together, one more slight hill to climb and then its down hill and flat for the last 4 miles... we follow a path until we reach the River Ribble. The Ribble path is narrow and over grow in parts. There are exposed tree roots and exposed stones, and erosion in parts. It will be a little muddy if it has rained. There are a couple of fields to cross with sheep.

There are a few wooden and stone styles on this walk.
There is a little road walking and two roads to cross.
The paths are, well established. They are eroded in parts, stoney, and maybe muddy.

Long trousers recommends. Walking poles useful.
