Shut Up & Write! is a global community that empowers writers to overcome procrastination, silence their inner critic, and make consistent progress on their projects. Our events provide a structured and focused environment where writers can come together, set aside distractions, and achieve their writing goals.
What to Expect
Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress. Once you arrive, our host will lead introductions, and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time. Afterward, we’ll have an optional time to chat and get to know each other. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

Shut Up & Write!® Thursdays in Traverse City

Writing can be a solitary occupation, but there is no reason to do it alone. If you focus on your writing better when you are around other people focusing on their writing, Shut Up & Write may be for you. These two hours include at least 90 minutes of silent, focused writing time -- and then, if you can spare it, some time to get to know your neighbors.Do you write better with others?
Your host likes writing in the company of other people writing, so please join him no matter what you want to write. We're a small group of regulars (and semi-regulars) who have worked on novels, memoirs, poetry, business, computer code, and nature and history nonfiction. What we have in common is that we're all writers -- and we're all welcome.We want to support good writing habits and accountability. Join us for an hour and a half of focused writing time on Thursday mornings at 10:00 am. (Please note that Books-a-Million opens at 10:00, so we're in as soon as they unlock the doors!)
If you notice only 1 or 2 RSVPs, don't be deterred! The event photo shows a pretty typical Thursday turnout, and many of us have become almost-every-week regulars. We're quite a mix, and we hope you'll find us good company for your writing, too.
All writers and all experience levels are welcome. And don’t worry, no one will see what you've written. This session is about getting your writing done and meeting other writers in your area.

10:15 am – Timer starts. Quiet, focused writing for 1-1/2 hours.
11:45 am – Timer ends. Stick around to chat, keep writing, or head out.Socializing is optional but welcome. After all, writing is solitary, and sometimes it helps to spend a little time around other people who understand the rewards and challenges. But if you don’t have time to stick around, no worries!
Running late? Just show up, get yourself settled, and write for the remainder of the hour. You are welcome to join in any post-writing socializing.
