A portable toilet is available. Bring your own water, snacks, and wear good shoes. It is very steep.

The largest of the open space lands that Midpen manages, Sierra Azul Preserve protects more than 19,000 acres of wilderness in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Overlooking the Lexington Reservoir, Los Gatos and southern neighborhoods of San Jose, the preserve encompasses much of the Sierra Azul range and its foothills - topped by the 3,486-foot peak of Mount Umunhum. With 26 miles of multiuse trails for hiking, dog walking, biking and horseback riding, the varied landscape offers visitors views of serpentine grasslands, rocky and steep chaparral, dense stands of bay trees, shaded oak woodland forests, deep ravines and riparian corridors that surround the seasonal or year-round water flow. Prime mountain lion habitat, Sierra Azul Preserve also provides homes for deer, bobcats, coyotes and many other species of animals.

Join me in getting some exercise after work. Plan to walk about 2.5-3mph (covering 2-3miles) in one hour then be on our way.

5-mile moderate hike up the bench on the top of St Joe's Hill. We'll go up the backside to Novitiate Park to avoid walking next to the freeway and hike up to the bench at the peak.

Meet at 6pm in front Los Gatos Library, on Main Street by the sculpture.

Please wear good shoes and bring water. If you are not used to hiking this will be challenging.

El Sereno Open Space Preserve is named for the 2,500-foot Mount El Sereno, part of a prominent ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains. A distinctive scenic backdrop to Los Gatos and Monte Sereno, the 1,614-acre preserve rises from the foothills up steep slopes to the ridgeline. It is primarily an exposed chaparral community with meadows at higher elevations and a few shaded areas near creeks

This is a hard hike, 1,000 feet of elevation in two miles. 1.4 miles are through a neighborhood.
