What we’re about
Tampa Bay Python’s mission is to help programmers and aspiring programmers in Tampa Bay and surrounding areas learn and use the Python programming language, and excel in areas where Python is used, particularly artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and devops. But we’re not limited to just those — there’s also web applications, game development, home automation, and so much more!
This isn’t just one of Tampa Bay’s oldest tech meetups. With our first meetup happening on Valentine’s Day 2007 (Pythonistas get more love these days), we’re one of the oldest Python meetups in general, even pre-dating San Francisco’s by almost two years!
As the leading language in the TIOBE Index of programming language popularity and the preferred language of AI, a strong Python presence will attract top talent and innovative companies to Tampa Bay. We want to be a catalyst for this growth by providing accessible education, networking opportunities, and hands-on workshops that bridge the gap between beginners and industry professionals. And we also want to have fun while doing it!
We aim to foster a welcoming, inclusive community where members can share knowledge, collaborate on projects, and advance their careers. Through regular meetups featuring expert speakers, coding workshops, and collaborative learning sessions, we're building Tampa Bay’s Python ecosystem and contributing to “The Other Bay Area’s” reputation as a thriving tech hub.

See all- The best, most fun Python Platform you’ve never heard of!Needs location
Python’s occupied the number one spot on the TIOBE Programming Community Index for the past couple of years, and it’s the preferred programming language in for AI and data science. Perhaps you’ve been thinking about learning it, but the thought of having to do another set of “Hello World” style exercises or enduring another tutorial where you make a “to-do” list is filling you with dread. Isn’t there a more fun way to get up to speed with Python?
Yes, there is, and it’s called Ren’Py. It’s billed as a visual novel engine for writing “Choose your own adventure” and dating simulation games, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a platform that lets you code in Python (and more) and combine interactivity, images, sound, and video. It also lets you write apps for desktop, web, and even mobile platforms, and with a fraction of the effort required by React, Vue, or Angular. It’s a fun framework that’s been used to produce games you can find on Steam, but it’s got applications well beyond amusement.
This is a “dry run” for the presentation that Joey’s giving at Kansas City Developer Conference the following week! But that’s a conference with thousands of attendees that’s hundreds of miles away and costs hundreds of dollars to attend. This version will be much closer, much cheaper (FREE), will feed you pizza, and will have a little more time for Q&A.
In this session, you’ll look not just at the basics of Ren’Py development, but the building of a dating game based on KFC’s official game, “I Love You Colonel Sanders,” a simple turn-based combat game starring Florida Man, and building mobile apps in a way that’s less frustrating than usual. And you’ll get all the code!
Join us at Embarc Collective on Thursday, August 7th at 6:00 p.m. for an evening of Python, and fun and ridiculous game-making!

This event was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Tampa Bay Tech Meetup Scholarship, a joint venture of Embarc Collective and Bank of America. They made it possible to book the venue and get catering for FREE — thanks so much!
