🌥Great Longstone Moor and Edge 9 miles🌬Monsal Head🐑Brushfield🐄Monsal Trail🌥
Details
Our scenic walk starts at Great Longstone Village, an attractive limestone village set around a pretty little green with an old cross. The village lies under the ridge of Longstone Edge.
There are some old cottages along the main street, a Georgian Manor House and a church dating from the 13th century.
Leaving this characterful village, our route heads a short way along to Monsal Head, one of the most famous view points in Derbyshire.
This beauty spot gives a spectacular view down into Monsal Dale and up the Wye Valley, the river far below winds through the rocky valley.
Leaving these spectacular views, our route heads up a steepish track to join the scenic path along Brushfield with more stunning views all along the ridge.
Our route drops down to the River Rye and joins the Monsal Trail. We head through Litton and Cressbrook Tunnels, and further along we reach the Tunnel of the Famous Railway Viaduct, known as the Headstone Viaduct, the views are spectacular from here.
The Tunnels were part of a former railway line which has now become a trail for Walkers and Cyclists. They offer a unique experience, each tunnel being approximately 400 meters long and lit during daylight hours.
After emerging from the Monsal Viaduct, we continue a short while on the Monsal Trail, eventually coming off to join the lane back to Great Longstone which will take us back to our carpark.
