3-Day Backpacking Perry Valley Loop, GWNF
3-Day Backpacking Perry Valley Loop, GWNF
The Perry Valley Loop is a wonderful loop hike that includes Big Schloss, Tibbet Knob and Half-Moon Mountain in the George Washington National Forest. This is a full 3 days, beginning on Friday and concluding Sunday afternoon. * **Length:** 27.4 miles * **Duration:** 3 days & 2 nights * **Elevation Gain:** 5,133 feet * **Peak Elevation:** 2,964 feet * **Difficulty Level:** Strenuous * **Cost**: None! For a thorough overview, please consider reading "[Perry Valley Loop Backpacking Guide](https://intothebackcountryguides.com/trail-guides/perry-valley-loop?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2tOHD9PVCXZrhHyUuboaurGFe3CAkvoqcceheeIUHwWaFrexBgnrMPQdE_aem_gDp3jGVZLhqAopOivcmAvg)" from Into the Backcountry. For Backpacking Trips, all participants will be **waitlisted** until you have been vetted. Please answer all of the questions asked during the RSVP or you will remain on Waitlist until they are received. Detailed logistics, carpooling and other trip details will be EMAILED once we have finalized the participants. **Notes:** * The PATC requires each hiker to sign a liability waiver, which will be available at the trailhead. * Please check Meetup the night before. I will cancel a hike due to unsafe conditions. * Attendance is limited at the discretion of our hike leaders. PATC rules do not permit children under 18 years to participate in a hike without a parent or guardian present. * Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Club volunteers maintain over 1000 miles of trails in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia, including 240 miles of AT (and the section we will hike!). For more information about PATC, please visit [https://www.patc.net/](https://www.patc.net/) **Backpacking Trip Essential Requirements & Expectations** *These items outline specific requirements and expectations for all participants on our backpacking trips. These are in addition to the PATC Liability Waiver and are crucial for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of everyone, especially given the remote nature of these trips.* Please read carefully. By registering for a backpacking trip, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to adhere to these requirements. 1\. Self\-Sufficiency & Responsibility: \* This is a group trip, but we operate on a self-sufficient model. You are responsible for your own well-being and preparedness throughout the trip. \* You must carry all your essential equipment, including shelter, food, a first-aid kit, water, and water purification supplies. Sharing some items with a partner is acceptable. 2\. Navigation & Preparedness: \* You are expected to understand the trip's difficulty, including total mileage, elevation gains and declines, type of terrain, and daily splits. \* You must be in good physical shape and capable of completing the planned itinerary. \* You are required to have your own printed maps, as well as a compass and/or GPS, and know how to navigate. This is particularly important if you miss the group's morning departure. \* If you have a medical condition that could become relevant during the trip (e.g., carrying an EpiPen or inhalers), you must inform the hike leader in advance. 3\. Leave No Trace & Wildlife Safety: \* All participants must follow Leave No Trace (LNT) principles. \* You must have an established method for securing your food from bears at night. 4\. Group Dynamics & Punctuality: \* All participants must be 18 or older. \* Leave your dog at home for backpacking trips. \* If carpooling, please bring cash or use Venmo to offset the driver's gas expenses. \* Punctuality is essential. Be on time for carpool departures and be ready to leave campsites at the agreed-upon times. \* If you tend to move slowly in the mornings, please allow extra time to be ready for departure. \* Bring a great sense of humor – it's an essential piece of gear! 5\. Communication: \* We will be in a remote area that may be out of cell service. \* If you have any questions or concerns before or during the trip, please ask the hike leader. **Understanding the Risks:** Please be aware that backpacking in a remote area, potentially out of cell service, involves inherent dangers and risks. Your preparedness and adherence to these guidelines are vital for the safety of yourself and the entire group. **Questions:** David M (“Square Feet”) is the PATC Volunteer leading this event and is a PATC certified Hike & Backpacking Leader, member of Trail Patrol and the Backpacking Committee Chair. David is certified in Wilderness First Aid. PATC’s goal is to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, so if you have any questions or need assistance along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out!
Handy Bikes | Beginners' No Drop Ride
Handy Bikes | Beginners' No Drop Ride
Meet in the parking lot of the Handy Bikes Service Center. At the start of each ride, we'll go over introductions to have a sense of participants' cycling experience. Over the course of our rides, we'll address the following: group riding dynamics; safety (ABC check & trail hazards); gear shifting; hill climbing; audible and hand communication within the group, with other trail users, and automobile drivers; what to bring on each ride; etc... Bring your questions, water & a snack. When it starts getting dark earlier, we'll need lights as well. Helmets a MUST. If you can, and especially if you've had issues with your bike, come a bit early to have it looked at ahead of the ride. PS - all levels are welcome to join, however, be mindful that if you are an experienced rider, please be prepared to ride at the pace of the newest rider in the group. Each week, depending on who's in attendance, and participants' riding ability/comfort level, we may do skills practice as a group in the parking lot or at the west end of Wheeler Ave. Once everyone is comfortable, we'll go for a ride on local trails and neighborhood streets and finish back at the shop. Happy Pedaling !! \~Maya

Friday Night Skate
Friday Night Skate
Bring your lights for the “Friday Night” Skate! **Join us for the Friday Night Skate!** See the monuments of DC all lit up at night! We will meet at the National World War I Memorial “Pershing Park” at 7pm. We’ll warm up with a nice easy skate to the Capital and skate along the mall and museums to the National Monument. We will then head to the Lincoln Memorial through the World War II Memorial. Those interested in just a 5.5 mile skate can backtrack to Pershing Park. The group will then proceed from the Lincoln to Haynes Point via Ohio Drive with the option to take the 3 mile loop (12 mile total skate) or sit by the water and enjoy the crisp air (8.5 mile total skate.) There are three options to loop back to the Pershing Park WWI Memorial and our path back will depend on the preferences / skill of the group. The skate is mostly flat on good pavement with a small slope coming down from the Washington Monument and a 40 yard small slop from the Lincoln to Ohio Drive. If skaters are more advanced we will cross the 14th St bridge, enjoy a few up and down hills and finish with a downhill through the 12th St. tunnel. Please feel free to jazz it up with lights, I wear a helmet bike light, a fun set of lights and lighted wheels! Wear your lights so you have fun, can see and be seen! In case of bad weather, I will cancel the skate by 6pm on this post. **Of course, all skating is at your own risk.**

Day Hike - Old Rag (9.4 Miles) + Old Bust Head Brewing Co
**Important** \- I've pre\-purchased day\-use tickets for this hike\. Please only sign up if you are 100% committed Old Rag is one of my favorite hikes on the east coast. The way up is nothing short of incredible - you will experience switchbacks, scrambles, false summits, interesting trail navigation, and absolutely amazing views. This is *the* iconic day hike in Shenandoah. Don't miss it. I plan to stop for food/drinks at Old Bust Head Brewing Co on the way back (7134 Farm Station Rd, New Baltimore, VA 20187). We will meet at Vienna Metro at 9AM and carpool to the trailhead. Drive time is about 1 hour and 45 mins - Please post a comment below if you are willing to drive. Carpooling saves the environment and makes friends. ## Trail Facts ***Difficulty Level: Strenuous** ** *Length: **9.4 Miles *** Duration: **5-6 hrs ** *Elevation Gain: **2,604 Feet *** Permits: **Pre-purchased (you can venmo me $2) ** *Parking: **Vienna Metro Station *** Dogs: **Not Allowed ** *Trailhead Coordinates: **38.571008, -78.293499** *** AllTrails Map: [https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/virginia/old-rag-mountain-loop-trail?u=i&sh=rak641](https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/virginia/old-rag-mountain-loop-trail?u=i&sh=rak641) **Trail Details:** This hike, although challenging, is one of the most popular and spectacular hikes in Shenandoah National Park. It has been referred to as an “unforgettable” hike by many. Your climb to the peak includes many rocky switchbacks, various false peaks, and several scrambles. The descent, which will be slightly longer than your ascent, is a much more gradual grade that ends with an easy walk down a fire road. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this trail. This is a challenging hike that will take most of the day. It is highly recommended that you bring plenty of water as well as snacks and electrolytes (i.e. Gatorade). Hiking Old Rag is an adventure that should be on every Virginia hiker’s bucket list. **DAY USE TICKETS: **There were limited tickets left, so I've pre-purchased 14 day use tickets. You can give me $2 in cash or via Venmo. **LIABILITY NOTICE:** Please remember that this group operates under the common adventurer model. Strickler Knob Hike (moderately strenuous, 5.8 mi/1,050 ft) & Woodstock Brew Hse
Strickler Knob Hike (moderately strenuous, 5.8 mi/1,050 ft) & Woodstock Brew Hse
This is one of the most fun hikes in the area! It's shorter than our usual routes but still a challenging rock hopping scramble! If you're not comfortable using your hands to move up and down rocks, this is NOT for you. The reward is a 360 degree view of the Luray Valley and New Market Gap We'll move at the usual pace (around 2.5 mph) and stop for a break at the top to enjoy the view. Expect the hike to take about 3.5 hours. Don't forget your lunch! Afterwards we’ll head to Woodstock Brew House for a drink and something more to eat. They have outdoor seating and a full menu of food. Hike link: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/virginia/strickler-knob-trail Brewery link: http://www.woodstockbrewhouse.com Although the hike is only 5.8 miles long with 1,050 feet of elevation gain it's still moderately strenuous, meaning that it'll be challenging for an unconditioned person. The terrain involves a steady and occasionally steep incline over a couple of miles, and a good amount of rock scrambling. We will meet at the Scothorn Gap Trailhead (38.691653, -78.580034) on Crisman Hollow Road. **CARPOOLING:** We encourage those with cars to be willing to carpool - you're the ones who make LMH great! Late Morning Hikers does not condone or encourage impaired driving. Drivers are expected to follow applicable laws and make responsible transportation choices.
