Estuary on Affect and Music
**Music Soothes the Savage Beast**
How do we measure the affect of a person and their work on people?
How did Mozart affect his generation and future generations?
What is Elvis’ affect?
Why is Taylor Swift so popular?
**1\. Music and affect**
Read part of the article by Reimer.
“When I was sixteen, a junior in high school in Brooklyn, I auditioned for the City High School Band of New York and was placed as first chair clarinet. First rehearsal, a piece we played (I don't remember what it was except that it was new to me) had a long, melodic clarinet solo, with accompaniment. When we finished playing it the director stopped the band and said, "Very nice, first clarinet. Let's do it again, this time with more feeling."

1. What does it mean to “Play with Feeling”?
2. Which music has moved you? Was it how it was played, the person playing it or the music itself?
3. What sort of emotion did you feel when moved by music, can you label the emotion?
**2\. Mozart and Affect**

0:00- 3:00 - 7:20- end
1. What were your impressions of the person of Mozart versus the music of Mozart?
2. What emotions were present in the room?
3. What context did knowing that Salieri was the court composer and the king himself playing the music have on the affect/feeling in the room?
**3\. Theories of The “Mozart Effect” [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLASrOujkGw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLASrOujkGw)**
a) Why do you think people thought Mozart made people smarter?
b) Has music ever contributed to better study or cognitive effects for you?
c) Why do we feel that classical music is more “virtuous” than pop or rock music?

2. What is the audience response to his introduction to the song?
3. What moral and cultural rules did Elvis break?

**5.b Article**
“We’re in a log cabin replete with open fire, the kind of warm Romantic environment
where one imagines Thoreau writing into the evening. On the wall hangs a faded portrait
beside an oil painting of a rustic country cottage. It’s early in the morning, or late at night,
and a singer, wearing what appears to be an antebellum nightdress, is serenading us on
a battered old piano, before suddenly she opens the top of the instrument and climbs in,
all the time enveloped in an enchanted golden powder. She reappears in a mythic forest
imbued with vivid green hues and vibrant, saturated moss. We’re watching the music
video for Taylor Swift’s first single “cardigan,” from her 2020 album folklore.1 Like Lewis
Carrol’s Alice or the children in C.S. Lewis’s Narnia, Swift opens the piano lid and enters
another world (Figure 1). The fantastical folkloric quality of this setting in the Arcadian
woods, what Vernallis would call the “implied geography of the video” (258), is reinforced by emotive lighting and majestic waterfalls (Figure 2). Next, the piano stool acts as a portal, transporting Swift to sea, the instrument itself acting as life raft in a scene not unlike one from James Cameron’s Titanic (1997), before finally taking her home. The drenched protagonist comforts herself with the eponymous cardigan upon her return, in a significant teleological moment of audio-visual synchronization (Figure 3). What is being mediated here? Why this turn to folklore and indie-folk esthetics in Swift’s work? I suggest that this single and, indeed, the album folklore provide a peak example of a societal search for foundations during the pandemic”.
McGrath, J. (2023). The Return to Craft: Taylor Swift, Nostalgia, and Covid-19. *Popular Music and Society*, 46(1), 70–84. [https://doi.org/10.1080/03007766.2022.2156761](https://doi.org/10.1080/03007766.2022.2156761)
1. What is Swift evoking in her video? Do you agree with McGrath that she's evoking a sense of a more magical world?
2. Why do you think this song had such an impact during the pandemic?
3. Does Swift remind you of other artists or evoke another time that's nostalgic to you?

Do you use music to soothe yourself or psyche yourself up to anything?

Our Tree of Wisdom
*‘Universally, trees have long been perceived as doors or gateways to other levels of consciousness, and humans have always honoured trees for their gifts and their wisdom.’*
Fred Hageneder
Under the auspicious influence of a New Moon in Taurus, join transpersonal art therapist and tarot reader Rachael Wildman as she turns our attention to the spirit of the Earth by focusing on trees; reminding us how we human beings have searched for Truth through the ages beneath their leafy boughs, providing insights into how we resemble these arboreal beings, and then looking at the symbolism of trees as they appear in the Tarot.
The talk will then branch out into a description of the process she took in creating her own Tree of Growth tarot spread; detailing what instigated its creation, the inspirations that fertilized its growth and how the spread is read along with the self-transformative benefits that can be found in seeking its counsel.
After the talk, time shall be given to explore the Tree of Growth spread as a collective process wherein everyone shall be granted the opportunity to participate, to divine a card through a simple ritual and then share insights into the reading of the spread for the benefit of a flourishing spiritual community.
There is no need to bring along a tarot deck as one shall be supplied, nor is it necessary to be a seasoned theosophist or tarot reader; an open-hearted curiosity, a love of nature’s spirit and our own unique wisdom-seeking nature is all that is required.
*‘Trees are the earth’s endless effort to speak to the listening heaven.’* Rabindranath Tagore

NeuroSparks Social Meetup!!!
Hi all, us at NeuroSparks are having another fortnightly meeting and we'd love to see you there!
When: the 16th of May (Saturday) from 12:30-3:30PM.
Where: we will be meeting at the Majorca Room at the City Library.
Access to the room is via a lift or steps in the foyer.
The City Library is located at 253 Flinders Lane, right next to Flinders Street/Town Hall Station.
This social gathering will be for those looking to connect with others in the community. It'll be a very casual setting, where everyone can be themselves and can and go when they feel like it. For anyone wanting to continue socialising after the room booking ends, we encourage you to get out and hit the town together!
**People are welcome to bring food/drinks to the event. Conveniently for us, there is a cafe on the library's ground floor and there are many cafes also nearby on Degraves Street! But for the sake of continuing to use the venue, please tidy up after yourself.**
This event is open to all neurodivergent people and anyone who values a friendly, inclusive space. Many attendees come on their own, so if you’re feeling a bit hesitant, know you’ll be in good company and warmly welcomed. If the group/noise feels too overwhelming at any point, there is a silent study room next door to decompress in.
If at any point you have concerns or feel uncomfortable
about any group member, please notify one of the organisers.
**For the purposes of not overwhelming attendees, we will be capping RSVPs at 50 people maximum. If you have RSVP’d and can no longer attend, please cancel your booking, to allow others to attend. If you sign up for the waitlist and Meetup prompts you to pay, please ignore this, as this event is not intended to be paid for.**
Looking forward to seeing all of you there!

Fundamentals of Authentic Relating - Self Expression
Being known, felt, and seen is a deep longing most of us have.
Yet, revealing ourselves without blaming, withdrawing, or over‑explaining can be challenging and some things are left out of conversation - sensations, emotions, impulses and desires…
This workshop is about becoming more aware of what is happening inside us in real time when we engage with others, developing the communication skills, and finding the courage to speak from that place in a way that deepens connection.
Through a series of experiential games, we will explore how to bring more honesty, clarity and aliveness into relationships by:
* Revealing more of ourselves and the things we don’t normally share in different forms, and discover the impacts on us and on others
* Using the aliveness of the present moment
* Taking more ownership of our own experience
* Expressing ourselves in ways that brings closeness
* Reflecting on the meaning we make of words
**TICKETS**
Tickets start at $30.
We’re committed to accessibility and offer further discount if money is a real barrier to attending.
[Book here](https://momence.com/Mysore-Melbourne/Fundamentals-of-Authentic-Relating---Self-Expression/130448893)
**FUNDAMENTALS OF AUTHENTIC RELATING**
Fundamentals of Authentic Relating (AR) happens every 3rd Saturday of the month.
It’s for people who want to bring more awareness, honesty, and connection into their relationships.
Anyone curious about personal growth, wanting more ease and connection in their interactions, interested in improving their relational skills, or wishing to gain a formal understanding of AR frameworks and mechanics.
Sessions are themed and we’ll begin by exploring how to notice what is happening inside (Feb), followed by listening more deeply (Mar), developing curiosity (Apr), expressing oneself with clarity and courage (May), and navigating boundaries and conflict with care (June).
**YOUR FACILITATOR**
Guillaume has been training in Authentic Relating since 2020, and most recently with ART international (level 4 facilitation certification).
He facilitates online and in-person AR workshops for corporates, training institutions, mental health organisations (Menergy, Island of Men), and at private events and festivals (Confest, Renaissance).
After 15+ years in leadership positions in the corporate world, Guillaume’s focus is now in the relational arts (Authentic Relating, Circling, Non Violent Communication) and therapeutic modalities (counselling, Gestalt psychotherapy). He is the founder of [Relational Spaces](https://relational-spaces.com/) where he supports others in their personal growth both through individual sessions and group facilitation, and the co-creator of Intentional dinner, a space for human connections and a meal.
Crown Chakra Reiki Practice Night
Namaste, healer.
It's time to light up the seventh chakra. It's where higher connection, spiritual awareness, and clear consciousness all come together.
And when it's humming, life just flows better.
Hence, our Reiki Crown Chakra Healing Night, where we'll do powerful meditations and group healing to strengthen it.
The crown chakra is especially important for healers, because it's the chakra that connects us to healing energy itself .So without it being strong and open, the energy simply can't flow properly
Among other things, the crown chakra is essential for:
* Spiritual awareness (so you can sense the bigger picture and feel guided in your life)
* A sense of connection to something greater (so you feel supported rather than alone in the world)
* Inner knowing (so you can access wisdom beyond the thinking mind)
* Mental clarity (so you can think cleanly without getting tangled up in your own head)
* Living in alignment with your higher purpose (so your daily life reflects what actually matters to you)
So come and join us for a powerful practice night and leave feeling energetically open and clearly connected.
I'm back from holiday, so will be leading this personally.
Hope you can make it,
Jeremy
PS If you've been craving a deeper dive into Reiki, our June retreat on our 50-acre property is the perfect chance.
Discover esoteric symbols, Reiki vortexes, forest meditations, a cacao ceremony, and powerful group healing. It's an immersive weekend where you’ll learn advanced skills you won't get from any regular class. For full details, visit: https://www.om-reiki.com.au/reiki-retreats.html.

Public Transport:
Take (direct) Train from Flinders St Station or Southern Cross Station, to Williamstown Station.
Or take a train from (the new) Town Hall Station or State Library Station, & change at Footscray Station, to Platform 6 for Williamstown Line train.
\*If unfamiliar with the Williamstown Line, last 3 stations are:
North Williamstown, Williamstown Beach, Williamstown Station/line ends.
Mentioning, as some general public get off train at Williamstown Beach Station when meant to go Williamstown Station.
Parking/Driving: Recommend parking in Hammer St, & then walk around corner (along Ann St), to Williamstown Station area.
There's a few only unrestricted parking spots directly outside the Station, but doubtful if a good place to park, for a few hours.
There's the Railway travelers carparking area 35 metres from the station.
Finding Me/Us: Exit Williamstown Station (only 1 exit/1 platform) & look to the left, where there's a big tree.
Or if drove, go to Ann St (on north side of Station) & walk past Station.
[\*Please Note: I posted/edited/copy-modified quickly details (from last walk in Williamstown); please check details in a day or 2, for any alterations]. (And I will condense so easier to read it all).

This event is also posted to the Philosophy Circle group.
Topic questions below, however please note these are open sessions not strict to the below:

* Does growth require discomfort?
* Can unnecessary suffering be mistaken for productive discomfort?
* Can suffering produce wisdom when it is reflected on properly?
* Is courage the willingness to remain present inside discomfort?
* Can comfort become a prison and lead to a shallow life?
* Is personal growth possible without some form of sacrifice?
* Is there a danger in constantly treating oneself as a project?
* Should personal development aim at happiness, virtue, freedom, usefulness, wholeness or holiness?
* Make makes a strong family?
* What duties do children owe their parents, and what duties do parents owe their children?

Sunday Meditation | Community Building | Connection | Meet New People
**Who We are..... 🤝**
Our journey to bring people together began in January of 2022. The group was started with a simple intention to gather and meet some likeminded people - connecting through the powerful act of meditation and sharing our genuine selves while sitting in a circle that represents equality, harmony and wholeness( *we believe everyone in the circle is a teacher and a student at the same time)*.
And over the last 4 years of consistently coming together, we have fostered a beautiful, loving, dependable community where members from all walks of life have experienced a sacred space to sit in silence together and meditate, share their authentic selves, give presence to others and forge meaningful and long lasting connections.

The Art of Authentic Relating - Level 1 - deep dive - 4 class immersion
Join us for a transformative 4-week immersion workshop in Authentic Relating and practice of **deeper listening**, designed to enhance your experience of intimacy and aliveness within connection, and **cultivate the embodied skills** required to navigating deep connections. Each week, we will explore themes, including self-awareness, vulnerability, empathy, and **artful communication**. Through experiential learning, group discussions, in a supportive environment, you will learn be able to practice "active listening", express yourself authentically, and cultivate more meaningful exchanges.
There will also be a deeper dive into the practice of artful reflecting and responding to others, and how to respond to someone's sharing in a way that makes them feel seen while expresses the core of what you wanted to share. This is an ongoing process of learning these skills, but we will be covering some of the core foundations of this skill, through discussion and practice.
There will be a strong emphasis on slowing down, tuning into the body, and allowing the habitual communication patterns to relax, while organically giving space for the novelty of spontaneous truths to be spoken and revealed. Having a closed group of participant and journeying over **4 x 3 hour classes**, over 4 weeks, will allow for a new level of depth and practice to extend and expand your capacity for more aliveness and more realness. This is a workshop for people who seek for more depth in their relating, for those who have a curiosity that calls them forward into the mystery of life.
The workshops will consist of core authentic relating practices, but with the continuation of participants and familiarity it will allow for greater depth, nervous system regulation and greater sense of safety. some other practices that usually won't be run in one-off events, will also be able to be explored due to the increased depth of the group.
If this sounds like something you want to explore, I look forward to sharing the space with you and others. If you have any questions, please reach out.
\*\* people in challenging financial situations are welcome to reach out and we work something out
The pricing of the event is done in a way which hopefully makes it accessible to most people; however it is more expensive than the monthly AR nights per session. This for few reasons:
-the level of space holding and depth that the deep dive facilitates requires more space holding
-there is a cap on the group as to not make it too large
-there is more actually teaching and coaching around the authentic relating practice compared with the Monthly.
all bookings must be made through [https://events.humanitix.com/authentic-relating-deep-dive](https://events.humanitix.com/authentic-relating-deep-dive)
