## Details
The title of the event is a paradox! Read in silence and then discuss with like-minded folks! :-)

We will meet in the Bartley's Restaurant area from 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM for silent reading and followed up by discussion. **During silent reading, you're expected to remain silent and read.** Please bring your headphones and refrain from the discussion during the first one hour in the area.
👥 **Socialising**
After an hour, at 8:15 PM, we'll discuss and socialize about the book you're reading. We highly encourage you to move between tables and strike up conversations with fellow book lovers. These discussions about literature and reading recommendations are often the highlight of the event!

**📌 Helpful Tips and Notes**
* Bring headphones to block out surrounding noise
* I will post a comment on the event page when I arrive to indicate where we're seated, so everyone can find us
* If you prefer to skip the silent reading, you can join directly at the bar at 8:15 PM

*Sold out* The House Must Win matinée - musical (Pavillion, Dun Laoghaire)
**Written by Mick Flannery, *The House Must Win* is a gritty new musical drama** **that sweeps audiences into the emotional undertow of its story and song.**
Please secure your own ticket for Sunday afternoon matinee performance. Welcome to include your seat number in the comments for others to purchase adjacent seats: I'm in seat D5.
Legendary Irish comedian, actor and broadcaster **Tommy Tiernan** will make his musical theatre debut in the role of Ray, while rising Belfast actor and singer-songwriter **Tabitha Smyth** will play Grace, Ray’s daughter. They will feature as part of a sterling ensemble cast of seven alongside **Ferdia Walsh-Peelo** (*Sing Street*), **Niall McNamee** (*Saipan*), **John McCarthy**, **Orlagh De Bhaldraithe** and **Damian Kearney**.
Directed by **Julie Kelleher**, with **Liam Robinson** (*Hadestown*) as Music Supervisor and **Ciarán Bagnall** on Set and Lighting Design, the creative team has worked closely with Mick over the past three years, shaping the world he has envisioned through this new script and its twenty-one songs.
Set on the western edge of Ireland in the 1970s, it follows two brothers living with the odds stacked against them. Each takes a different path in the hope of leading a “good” life, both trying to honour the woman who holds their hearts. In a town of backroom poker games, secrets and bribes, broken families and broken hearts, the people of this place must learn how to play the cards they’ve been dealt – and discover what it truly means when *the house must win.*
Twenty years ago, Mick Flannery released his debut album *Evening Train*, originally written in response to a college assignment to “write a musical.” Mick did exactly that, though at the time he focused solely on the lyrics and music. Two decades later, following various iterations and workshop developments, he has now written the script for the first time, bringing to life the songs from that debut album alongside ten new compositions to create *The House Must Win*.

**Rose of Nevada** (114 min)
**Director:**Mark Jenkin
**Starring:**George MacKay, Francis Magee, Callum Turner, Mary Woodvine, Edward Rowe, Rosalind Eleazar
**Synopsis**
A Cornish modern classic. Eerie, heart-breaking, wonderful.’ — Mark Kermode When a fishing boat, the Rose of Nevada, lost with all hands 30 years ago, mysteriously reappears in the old harbour of a forgotten Cornish village, for those who remember, it’s surely a sign. The boat must go out to sea again and maybe then the luck of the devastated village will turn. Young father Nick (George MacKay) and enigmatic newcomer Liam (Callum Turner) join captain Murgey (Francis Magee), and they head to sea. But when they return, satisfied with their haul, something is amiss — they’ve slipped back in time, and the villagers greet them as if they are the original crew. Rose of Nevada is Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin’s hotly anticipated and critically acclaimed follow-up to his BAFTA-award-winning first feature Bait (2019) and Enys Men (2022). Unique among British feature filmmakers for the analogue way in which he crafts his films, Jenkin once again serves as writer, director, director of photography, editor, sound designer and score composer.

Disc Tues / BAFTA Winner: I SWEAR at Marcus Crosswoods!
Join us as we get together to see the BAFTA-winning British biographical dark-comedy/drama, I SWEAR! The film is based on the true-life story of a Scottish man diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome at an early age. Here are details, a trailer and our plan for this event:
DESCRIPITON: This true-life story follows a Scottish man diagnosed with Tourette's at 15. Targeted as 'insane' by his peers, he struggled with a condition few had witnessed. In search of his life’s purpose, he began campaigning for better understanding and acceptance of the condition of Tourette's as an adult.
The film is written/directed/produced by Kirk Jones and stars Robert Aramayo, Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Peter Mullan.
TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeWqQN3snCU
BUZZ & ACCLAIM: I Swear currently has an incredible 100% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which says: “A deft balance of prickly and sweet that's bound together by Robert Aramayo's knockout performance, I Swear doesn't sugarcoat the challenges of Tourette syndrome while delivering an uplifting tale of resilience.” Others call it, “"funny, fierce and full of heart!” The film was released earlier in the UK making it eligible for this year’s BAFTA’s where it won Best Casting and Best Lead Actor for Robert Aramayo. The film and Robert Aramayo's performance will be eligible for next year’s Oscars!
PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing and will meet in the bar area about 30 minutes before showtime! Once details are confirmed, advance ticket purchase is advised! Details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer.
Should be a good one, Dan

Pop-up Book Club 3: The Ballad of The Sad Café, by Carson McCullers
Let’s meet and share our thoughts about Carson McCullers’ novella, The Ballad of The Sad Café.
City Lights (1931)
"The SOB is a ballet dancer. He’s the best ballet dancer that ever lived, and if I get a good chance I’ll kill him with my bare hands." - W.C. Fields
In *City Lights*, Chaplin's Little Tramp meets a blind girl selling flowers who mistakes him for a wealthy man. When he learns that an operation may restore her sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have the surgery. He also befriends an alcoholic millionaire who only recognizes him when he is drunk. When the blind girl and her grandmother fall behind in the rent and face eviction, he tries working and even enters a boxing competition to raise the money they need.
Regarded as Chaplin's masterpiece, *City Lights* has been ranked on more than seventeen "100 greatest movies of all time" lists. Orson Welles cited it as his favorite picture.
*City Lights* is available for streaming on Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBOMax, Tubi and PlutoTV. The Columbus Library lists three copies on blu-ray and eight copies on DVD. Watch the movie on your own, then join us upstairs at East Market to discuss the film.
If you want more, *Unknown Chaplin* is a three-episode lost-footage documentary available on Youtube. It covers his time on *City Lights* beginning at the twenty-six minute mark of episode two: https://youtu.be/f8960Uc15hI?t=1558
