🎄 This Christmas: If You’re Not Going Home, Come Eat With Me
🎄**This Christmas: If You’re Not Going Home, Come Eat With Me**
*A Vietnamese homecooked supper for anyone staying in Berlin this holiday season.*
**Welcome to homecooked stories by Trang**
This December, I’m hosting a special edition for those of us who are staying in Berlin — whether you don’t celebrate Christmas, can’t travel home, or simply want a cozy evening around a shared table.
**The Story**
I’ve lived in Europe for almost 13 years, and every December brings the same familiar question:*“What am I going to do for Christmas this year?”*
It’s not my holiday, but the city changes — friends travel, families gather, and Berlin becomes unusually still. I’ve always found myself caught between loving the quiet… and feeling the low note of everyone else having a place to belong.
Over time, I created my own tradition:
Every Christmas, I cook myself a feast. Not because I plan to eat everything, but because the act of cooking makes me feel at home again.
Sometimes it’s just me.
Sometimes one friend.
Sometimes a small group of people who also aren’t going anywhere.
Slowly, my home became a *home away from home* for friends spending the holidays in Berlin.
This year, I’m opening that table to you too.
**Event details**
A Vietnamese family-style meal, following the Northern tradition:
**một mặn · một canh · một rau**
(one savory/protein dish · one soup · one vegetable)
And because it’s Christmas, we’ll add:
✨ an extra savory dish
✨ a small sweet dessert
The menu is made of dishes that appear again and again on my family’s table during the first meal after I arrive home:
* **Canh khoai tây cà rốt hầm xương**
Potato & carrot soup simmered with pork bones
* **Thịt kho tàu**
Braised pork belly & eggs, glossy and rich
* **Xíu mại sốt cà chua**
Vietnamese-style meatballs in tomato sauce
* **Bắp cải luộc + nước mắm gừng**
Boiled cabbage with ginger fish sauce — humble, clean, comforting
* A **small, sweet surprise dessert**
No vegan or vegetarian option will be available for this dinner.

Church on Sunday (Worship in English)
**Join Us for Sunday Worship at the American Church in Berlin!**
The American Church in Berlin (ACB) is an **ecumenical Protestant congregation** where people from *many* Christian traditions worship together—Lutheran, Reformed/Presbyterian, Anglican/Episcopal, Methodist, Baptist, non-denominational, Roman Catholic, and even a few Eastern Orthodox members. Wherever you come from, you’ll find a place where you can feel at home.
Our worship is **traditional and liturgical**, rooted in the rich patterns of the Christian church and easy for both Protestants and Roman Catholics to enjoy. We celebrate **Holy Communion every Sunday and every festival day**, and all baptized Christians are welcome at the Lord’s Table.
ACB is an **extraordinarily diverse congregation**, with members from around the world. On any given Sunday you’ll find long-time Berlin residents, young adults, teenagers who attend on their own, families with children, seniors, and many visitors and tourists passing through the city.
Our community is known for its **warm and friendly fellowship**—it’s one of the things people talk about most after visiting. Some folks dress formally and others show up in jeans and sneakers; we sit side by side without judgment. **Come exactly as you are.**
Most importantly: **our welcome is for everybody—EVERYBODY.** If you’re looking for a church home, a place to pray, just looking to connect, or simply a peaceful hour of worship during your travels, you’re invited.
We’d love to welcome you this Sunday!

📅 **Date & Time**
* Date: Saturday, 27 December 2025
* Start: 10:00 am at Wannsee S-Bahn Station (Travel via RE1, S1, or S7)
* Finish: approx. 4:00 pm at Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (Return via RE1 or S7)

* Walking along the Havel River and through Düppeler Forst
* Historical sites: House of the Wannsee Conference, Glienicke Bridge, Babelsberg Palace
**🤔 Why this hike?**
The period between Christmas and New Year can feel overwhelming for many – filled with pressure to reflect and plan ambitious resolutions. This hike is an opportunity to let go of the expectations. As we walk, we’ll explore ways to release stress, embrace the present moment, and approach the new year with a sense of purpose and serenity.
**🔔 What to know & bring**
* We walk at a steady, moderate pace, with breaks and care for one another.
* It’s winter, dress for the season and the weather. Important: hiking or running shoes, warm layered clothing, hat and gloves.
* Bring enough food and water for the whole day, as we won’t stop anywhere to buy snacks or drinks. A thermos with hot tea or coffee is highly recommended!
* Don’t forget your public transport ticket for the way there and back.
* Bring your pilgrim passport. There may be opportunities to collect stamps along the route.
**🌊 Optional Ice Bath Experience:**
At a riverside beach along our path, we will pause for a symbolic ice bath (completely optional). This tradition represents cleansing, renewal, and a fresh start for the new year. If you’d like to participate, please bring swimwear, a towel, and warm clothes to change into.
📩 **Questions & Registration**
Reach out any time for more details or help with your travel plans. You’re also welcome to join our WhatsApp group, where we share updates and photos from the trail.

**Waitlist = You're in! 😊**
Currently, only 10 members can officially register on Meetup (due to the restrictions of the free version). However, you’re welcome to join the hike by joining the Whatsapp group for this event (Message me directly to confirm your participation and get the link for the Whatsapp group).
Shamanic Circle 🔥 The Wild Hunt
**Trance Journeys along Forgotten Pagan Paths**
In the **Rauhnächte**, the nights between years, Central European folklore speaks of the **Wild Hunt**: a powerful procession of spirits, ancestors, animal forces, and elemental beings moving through the winter darkness. Led by figures such as Wodan/Odin or Frau Perchta, **the Wild Hunt embodies the untamed forces of nature — chaotic, cleansing, and deeply transformative**.
In pre-Christian traditions, **encountering the Wild Hunt meant coming face to face with what cannot be controlled**: death and rebirth, fate, instinct, and the raw truth of the natural world. It tore down false order and carried away what no longer belonged, making space for renewal.
In modern life, many of us live far from these rhythms. **We are overstimulated yet disconnected, constantly managing, planning, optimizing — often exhausted by the need to hold everything together.** During the darker months, unprocessed grief, fear, and fatigue tend to surface, while our culture offers little space to truly release or transform them.
This shamanic drum circle invites us to **ride the Wild Hunt instead of resisting it**. Through the steady pulse of the drum, we step out of linear time and into a deeper, older rhythm. **We allow what is no longer alive in us — habits, identities, expectations — to be carried off by the wild forces of midwinter.**
Riding the Wild Hunt is an act of surrender and reclamation. **We reconnect with instinct, with ancestral memory, and with the part of ourselves that knows how to move through uncertainty without control.** In doing so, we find strength, clarity, and a grounded sense of belonging — not by taming the wild, but by remembering that we are part of it.
This circle offers a space to release, to listen, and to realign with the deeper currents that still move beneath modern life, especially in this sacred time between endings and beginnings.
📍 **Location:** Samariter Kiez (You will receive the address after registration)
💫 **Energy Exchange**: €25 — 35
⏰ **Date & Time:** Dec 28th 2025 \| 5 pm — 7:30 pm

* **Route distance:** \~16 km, moderate effort

### ⚠️ A few practical notes
Everyone is responsible for their **own safety and comfort**.
Please bring whatever you personally need for a winter hike: water, rain/sun protection, medication, warm layers, etc.
**Weather check:**
If there’s a serious rain forecast, the event will be **postponed** to another date. 🌧️
Looking forward to a cosy, nature-filled Boxing Day 🌲✨

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.

• Show up and try it out.
• Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process
• Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/).
• Attend orientation in advance.
• At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility.
• Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM.
• Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895).
The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
