Filmonik Meetup and screening #127
Filmonik Melbourne is an open filmmaking group with monthly open-screen screenings like an open-mic for films. Meet at Eclipse on Tuesday April 28th for our 127th screening and it's our proven mix of immediate, spontaneous, crafty, fun, inventive and weird short films. You should expect comedies, a bit of drama, animation maybe, there's generally one suspense/thriller, one music video, some fun trash, horror or documentary but sometimes we don't even know what will be playing. Films are generally under 5 minutes to keep things fresh and fun, followed by a quick QA with the director to hear about the process. Enjoy the networking, meet the artisans, recruit for your next short film, hang out.
**DETAILS:**
Admission $13+fees = $13.83.
https://events.humanitix.com/filmonik-127-open-screen-short-films
Tickets at the door if still available ($15 cash exact change, or Square)
FILMS UNRATED (18+ by default). Content may offend.
TUESDAY APRIL 28 at Eclipse Cinema 32 Wellington Street, Collingwood.
This is an accessible venue, DDA-compliant.
6pm start. Please arrive in advance so we can start at 6:15pm at the latest. Eclipse is Licensed to serve a range of quality wines & craft beers and has homemade Choc Tops, popcorn or sweets.
**FILMMAKERS:**
Our open-screen get pretty popular these days so the best practice is submitting in advance at filmonik.com.au/submit-your-film or [info@filmonik.com.au](mailto:info@filmonik.com.au) so we can reserve you a spot in the program. Films under 5-minutes get close-to-automatic entry, and anything over may get held up until there's a quiet month. A quick QA with the host follows each film. Organize your own premiere with us or run a cheeky pre-premiere of your festival film. Guidelines here: filmonik.com.au/how-to-screen.
Filmonik is part of the worldwide Kino movement active in 30+ cities around the world since 1999.

â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢â¢
**BACHATA CLASSES TIMELINE:**
**6:15 - 6:45pm: FREE class for absolute beginners** to learn the fundamental and the basic of bachata. (Upstairs)
**7:00 - 8:00PM Beginners:** Your Latin dance journey starts here! We'll teach you the essential holds, basics steps and turns that will prepare you for the higher classes and kick start your Bachata journey. First-timers welcome!
**7:00 - 8:00PM Sensual Bachata (Intermediate level)**: This class builds on your existing understanding of turns, wraps, connection and **(most importantly) frame**; to introduce Bachata sensual whole-body movements. Mastering the techniques in this class will get you ready for any social dance floor anywhere in the world.
We recommend at least 8-12 months of regular dancing before attempting this class. Check with an instructor for tips on how to improve your frame so that you will get the most out of this class.
**8:00 - 9:00PM Intermediate Social Moves:** This class is perfect for dancers of all levels who have at least 8-12 weeks of experience dancing Bachata. In this class, we focus on teaching you fun social moves that you can use immediately on the dance floor.
The moves and combinations taught in this class are perfect for Australiaâs social dance scene and will keep you dancing for hours.
**8:00 - 9:00PM Advanced Bachata**: In this class we introduce advanced techniques, complex timing, and musicality. This class requires an assessment (or invitation from an instructor). Students in this class should be able to lead and follow controlled whole-body movements learned in the Intermediate Sensual class.
It is our expectation that advanced dancers are practicing their dance 3-4 times per week. We recommend advanced dancers continue participating in 7PM Sensual Bachata class regularly to keep fundamentals strong.

ð
Agenda ð
5:30 PM - Doors Open!
6:00 PM - Welcome from the organizers / housekeeping
6:05 PM - **"Changing the engine mid-flight: A startup data pivot" - By Susan Brander, CTO Kaleida**
What happens when your startupâs data model is held together with duct tape, but you still have to fly the plane, ship features, and act cool about it?
Startups move fast, and sometimes that means making the best architecture decisions you can, and being utterly wrong because you donât yet fully understand the domain youâre building for.
At Kaleida, we chose DynamoDB as the cheapest way to get our product off the ground quickly, pushing relational logic into separate tables and thinking weâd gotten it right and assuming if we hadnât that weâd clean it up later (if we survived).
SPOILER!
We survived and thrived! Later came around fast, and it looked like:
\- bloated documents
* Relational logic spread across tables
* Queries dragging us down
We knew weâd modelled it wrong, and that not changing it soon would only multiply the difficulties in the future. So, mid-flight, we changed engines.
This talk is a candid case study of what it takes to evolve your architecture under pressure:
* found our real data inside our current data
* Pivoted to a One Table design
* Pulled off a zero-downtime migration
* Did it all while shipping features and pretending we werenât panicking.
If your team is battling tech debt, scaling pains, a data model that no longer reflects reality, (or you just want to hear about someone elseâs war wounds) then come along.
6:35 PM - Pizza & Networking
7:00 PM - "**Let the Agent Read the Boring Reports: AI-Powered Database Auditing for PROTECTED Compliance on AWS**" - **By Christina Chen, Senior DevOps Engineer, Mantel Group**
Nobody reads CSV audit reports. But under Australia's IRAP PROTECTED framework, organisations must continuously monitor and evidence database user activity â and assessors want proof.
This talk builds a two-stage event-driven pipeline: Lambda extracts MySQL RDS user activity to S3, then a Strands Agent on Bedrock autonomously assesses findings against ISM controls, and generates assessor-ready output
7:30 PM - Networking and finish the Pizza!
8:00 PM - Doors Close, see you next time!

Bay loop (5 beaches, 2 hills) (4 spots - road trip)
[Instagram: Road Trips by The Dancing Voyager: Ron Singh](https://www.instagram.com/the_dancing_voyager_ron_trips)
Good weather! Spontaneous day trip for a loop of the bay, stopping at 5 beaches and 2 hills! Very short notice! These are always fun!
Over 60 road trips done in 4 years! I run 3 Meetup groups (shown on my profile).
This road trip is for people new to Australia who have not been to this location (International Students, Working Holiday Makers and tourists)! No evidence is required. I will trust you!
**Details given below in sections: (1) Questions / (2) Road trip itinerary / (3) Payment / (4) Responsibility / (5) Breaks / (6) Weather / (7) Phone charging / (8) Contact**
**\-\-\- \(1\) QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS \-\-\-**
**Your questions for me:** Why is the total fee so low at $20, covering a new, large rental (SUV), fuel and driver, on something that seems really high quality and well planned, like a private tour company? Sounds too good to be true or that there is a catch. Is this genuine?
**My answers to you:** Because this project is my community service to give back. I explain this further below. The low fee is just a formality to confirm your place, so that I know you are serious on attending.
This is genuine. Over 60 road trips done in 4 years! I have created precious memories for many people new to Australia. Photos on Instagram link further above.
**\-\-\- \(2\) ROAD TRIP SUMMARY AND ITINERARY \-\-\-**
Day trip for a loop of the bay, stopping at 5 beaches and 2 hills. Vehicle will be going on a ferry to complete the loop! Amazing changes in scenery during the entire road trip!
**Itinerary: Arthurs Seat lookout - Rye Beach - Sorrento - relaxing ferry crossing to Queenscliff (45 minutes) - Thirteenth Beach - Torquay Beach - Bells Beach - You Yangs mountain range lookout (you can swim at the beaches (except Bells) or just walk/relax)**
**Meeting point: Fed Square, 8:45 am**. Back there by **6:45 pm**. Meet by the steps (main entrance, opposite the Swanston Street tram stop).
**\-\-\- \(3\) PAYMENT \-\-\-**
**Total fee: $20 in total (no other costs). This covers a new, large rental (SUV), fuel and driver.**
**Eventbrite link for payment:**
[https://bay-loop-road-trip.eventbrite.com.au](https://bay-loop-road-trip.eventbrite.com.au/)
**Cancellations:** If I cancel the road trip for any unforeseen issues, a full refund will be given. If you cancel, there is no refund.
**Why is the fee so low?**
The low fee is just a formality. It might sound too good to be true or that there is a catch. There is no catch. I am simply someone who has been giving back for many years. I playfully call this project a âMelbourne travel secretâ!
There are people in this world who want to genuinely give back without any expectations because they are truly fulfilled and grateful for what they have. I am one of those people. This is my community service. I am not doing this for money and I never have. Money cannot buy passion.
The nature of majestic Australia helped me find peace and passion and I want to give back by sharing that inspiring nature with people new to this country. If they are also inspired by that nature, then that is my reward. There is no hidden agenda in doing this project.
The reason I am being quite upfront is because in this day and age, there is always a catch when people do something like this. There is none with me and I am not selling or promoting anything. I do not need anything because I have peace, passion and fulfilment. I have everything. I am truly humbled and grateful.

**\-\-\- \(4\) RESPONSIBILITY\, LIABILITY\, SAFETY \-\-\-**
As your driver, I am responsible and liable for your safety while we are in the vehicle. Passengers are insured as per the Australian law.
For times we are outside the vehicle, we then become responsible for our own liability and safety, just like every other capable adult in society.
**\-\-\- \(5\) BREAKS/MEALS \-\-\-**
There will be many breaks for sightseeing/walks. I will stop at places where food/snacks will be sold but you are welcome to bring your own as well. There will be a lunch break at either a cafe or takeaway shop.
**\-\-\- \(6\) WEATHER AND WHAT TO WEAR \-\-\-**
I plan events when weather looks good but please also see itinerary for location details and check the forecast to dress accordingly. My advice is to always be prepared! Recommend to have something to cover you if rain suddenly appears or if winds suddenly get cool. Also recommend to carry sunscreen and a hat.
Please also wear good, comfortable shoes that can provide protection from water (in case there are muddy areas). You can bring many things, as the vehicle will have a lot of storage space.
My road trips do not have a lot of long walks. The focus is on sightseeing, relaxing and appreciating the beauty of nature.
**\-\-\- \(7\) PHONE CHARGING \-\-\-**
Please charge your phone before joining. In the past, people have taken lots of videos and photos and used up their batteries! You can bring your charging cable if you want. The vehicle will have various charging ports.
**\-\-\- \(8\) CONTACT \-\-\-**
If you need to contact me, please reach out through Meetup, Eventbrite or Instagram. If you wanted my mobile number, please let me know.
Melbourne MongoDB User Group #1 2026
Welcome to the first 2026 meetup of **Melbourne ðŠðº MongoDB User Group**.
The team at Mantel Group has kindly offered to host us for the evening at their office in Melbourne on Flinders Street. **Complimentary drinks and snacks, as well as some SWAG, will be available, proudly sponsored by the team at MongoDB and Confluent**.
We're looking forward to seeing familiar faces and welcoming newcomers!
Please note that we have limited spots this time, so RSVP early. You will not be able to enter the building after 6 PM, so please be on time.
**Agenda**
* 5:00 pm - Arrival & Networking
* 5:30 pm - Welcome
* 5:35 pm - Talk #1 - Stephen Ermann - Avoid the AI Monolith: Deploy Multi-Agent Systems with MongoDB and Confluent
* 6:00 pm - Talk #2 - Alex Peng - Sharding in MongoDB
* 6:25 pm - Quiz & Swag
* 6:35 pm - Networking & Food
**Speakers**
**Speaker #1 -** **Stephen Ermann** is a **Senior Customer Success Technical Architect at Confluent**, where he helps large enterprises design and operate mission-critical event streaming platforms with **Apache Kafka,** **Confluent Platform/Cloud** and **Apache Flink**. Based in Australia and working closely with major organisations, he focuses on scalable architectures, secure integrations, and smooth cloud migrations.
Stephen has deep, hands-on experience connecting operational data stores like **MongoDB** into real-time, event-driven systemsâturning CDC streams and transactional data into streaming workloads that power modern applications. Heâs passionate about making distributed systems practical, sharing field lessons, and helping teams move from batch to truly real-time data.
**Presentation #1** \- Avoid the AI monolith and learn how to design **event-driven multi-agent systems** with Confluent and MongoDB. In this talk, weâll unpack the shift from classic predictive models to generative and agentic AI, and show why data readiness and real-time context - not just bigger models - determine whether your agents are actually useful in production. Youâll see how treating agents as event-driven microservices with a âbrainâ helps you avoid brittle point-to-point integrations and instead build scalable, observable systems.
Weâll then walk through how **Confluent Cloud, Apache Flink® Streaming Agents, and MongoDB Atlas** fit together to provide the streaming backbone, vector search, and RAG capabilities that modern agentic applications need. Using an automated insurance claims demo, weâll illustrate how real-time embeddings, external tables, and vector search in Flink SQL work with MongoDB Atlas to power context-aware decisions and end-to-end workflow automation. We will also share practical pointers and resources so you can start experimenting with your own multi-agent architectures after the meetup.
**Speaker #2 -** Alex Peng is a Technical Services Engineer at MongoDB, specialising in MongoDB Atlas Support. With deep expertise in cloud deployments, Alex is passionate about helping customers navigate complex challenges on MongoDB Atlas, ensuring they get the most out of MongoDB's products and services.
**Presentation #2** explores the fundamentals of sharding in MongoDB, covering the core concepts and architecture that power horizontal scaling in MongoDB. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of sharding's strengths and how to leverage them effectively. We will also provide practical guidance on selecting the shard key to maximise your application's performance and scalability.
Thanks,
The Melbourne MUG Team!
