Los Lobos at The Birchmere!
Los Lobos at The Birchmere!
Los Lobos is one of my Top Favorite Bands. They have an eclectic mix of Rock, Folk and a Spectrum of Latino music. I’ve seen them live a bunch of times and the band and the crowd are a rousing lot of fun. I have a ticket for the April 19th. That show sold out and so the April 20th show was recently added. If anyone is in for the April 20th show, I will pick up a ticket for myself for that night, as well. I just might anyway. The Birchmere is the finest music venue I have ever been to, and since moving to Alexandria, I have been there about twenty times. The sound system is the finest I have ever heard at a venue. Even on my own, I find that it is easy to make friends at virtually every show. You can dine before or during the performance. The food is pretty good; the staff is outstanding. Here are videos representing the songs they played at their 2024 Birchmere show. I was there for that one and it was a blast! Skip around for a taste and/or give them all a listen. Lots of good stuff here, imho. [https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/los-lobos/2024/the-birchmere-alexandria-va-3babd068.html](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/los-lobos/2024/the-birchmere-alexandria-va-3babd068.html) The Birchmere is General Admission, all the time. I get there early on show nights so that I can choose my own table. There are six seats at every table. If you want to join me at my table on April 19th and/or April 20th (Providing that anyone else is going) I will grab the table for up to six people. If it is more than six, I will try and grab another table. If it’s more than that, then we will have quite a party. Tickets are on sale right now. They are GA. To get a $5-$10 break, purchase your ticket at the box office on any evening that they are having a show. Those nights, the box office is open from 5 to 9. Check The Birchmere FAQ for full info. Blue Power Socialist Night School
Blue Power Socialist Night School
In America today, police enjoy unmatched power. On the streets, officers employ violence at their own discretion. Behind closed doors, they are even more powerful. In city halls, police strong-arm local leaders and nullify attempts at public oversight. And in state legislatures and Washington, DC, police lobbyists and union leaders zealously uphold a bipartisan consensus against even mild reform. Yet as recently as fifty years ago, police still served at the pleasure of democratically elected politicians, not the other way around. In *Blue Power: How Police Organized to Protect and Serve Themselves*, Stuart Schrader narrates the rise of a bottom-up movement of rank-and-file officers who lifted policing above the law. Organizers launched their campaign in the 1960s, courting a public backlash to urban uprisings and civil rights. City by city, county by county, they formed unions and other organizations and won control over working conditions, impunity from oversight, and insulation from lean budgets. By the 2000s, this movement had triumphed nationally, shoring up the power of the police to overrule the public interest in the name of law and order. Through deep archival detective work, *Blue Power* reveals how police forced American democracy to back the blue. Join us for a discussion of the book with the author at our next Socialist Night School. Stuart Schrader is an associate professor of history at Johns Hopkins University, where he is the director of the Chloe Center for the Critical Study of Racism, Immigration, and Colonialism. He is also the author of *Badges Without Borders: How Global Counterinsurgency Transformed American Policing*. Questions? Accessibility concerns? Nordic Comedy/Nordic Language Practice
Join the Nordic Culture and Language Exchange Meetup Group at For Five Coffee Roasters Café, 901 K Street NW, Washington D.C. on Saturday, 25 April from 3-5pm. We’ll talk about some of the unique types of comedy found in Nordic culture, including folk humor/joke books, traveling musical comedy artists, the former Scandinavian Vaudeville circuit in America, and current Nordic comedians like Ismo from Finland, Pernille Haaland from Norway, Ari Eldjárn from Iceland, Casper Christensen from Denmark, and Petra Mede from Sweden. Then we’ll have conversation practice, where you are welcome to perform your own “tight five” (slang for 5 min comedy set) in Finnish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Swedish or Danish. Or you can simply read some jokes or discuss funny stories in your preferred Nordic language! After the Meetup event, we will attend an Icelandic comedy show (in English) at the nearby Eaton DC hotel. Hello piano players: Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026 at my house, 5612 Cromwell Drive, Bethesda, MD 20816. We will start at 2:00 pm. Also, reach out to a friend and work up a duet – they are fun and always welcome. In the past we have had duets with two pianos, with singers, and with the clarinet, and they bring a nice variety of music to our meetings. We will have snacks, finger food, light drinks, beer and wine, but your donations of food and drink are always welcome. Parking is on the street near my house. I hope to see you on April 26th. All the best, Paul Connor

Contra dance with Big Scioty May 2 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
Contra dance with Big Scioty May 2 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
**Caller: Richard Ades** **Band: The McKenzies** **Clinton Heights Lutheran Church** **15 Clinton Heights Ave, Columbus, OH 43202** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle.

How to Be a Better Communicator - A Free Seminar
Communication is everything in life. You are only as successful as your ability to communicate! \- What if you could confidently talk to anyone? \- What if you had the ability to calmly control every conversation? \- What if you could close that sale\, ask for that date\, make new friends\, repair problematic relationships\, get that raise\, or effortlessly express any idea with confidence? You can! The secret to success relies on your ability or inability to effectively communicate. Attend a free seminar and gain a better ability to communicate. 1266 Dublin Road, Columbus, OH 43215 Hosted by the Church of Scientology of Central Ohio For more information, contact Rhiannon, the Event Host at 614-221-5024

Sunday funday: let's play dodgeball at Scioto Audubon park
Dodgeball is back again! If you’ve been wanting to come out, this is an easy one to join. We’ll be playing for about 1.5 to 2 hours, you do not need to bring any equipment, and no experience is needed. We use a specific set of rules and equipment to make the games run better and keep them fun for everybody, not just people who already know how to play. If it rains, the event will be canceled.
