New Years Day Hike @ Great Falls (MD)
Happy New Year, Adventurers!
Continuing a tradition that started in 1991, Adventuring's first hike of the New Year will be at the Great Falls of the Potomac, arguably the most spectacular natural wonder in the National Capital Area. 2026 being an even year, we will focus on the Maryland side of Great Falls.
We will gather at Great Falls Tavern and head upstream along the C&O Canal towpath, with the Canal on one side and the Potomac River on the other. After a couple of miles we will reach Swains Lock, a scenic and historic spot which should have enough picnic tables for our lunch. After lunch we'll retrace our steps back to the Tavern. Some of us may want to continue downstream a short ways past the Tavern to the trail leading to the Falls Overlook, while others may skip the Overlook and head out right away. Total length of this easy, level round-trip hike will be about 5 miles.
If the weather cooperates, a stop at the beer garden at nearby Old Anglers Inn on MacArthur Boulevard may be in order. Warming up at the Irish Inn at Glen Echo may also be a tempting after-hike option.
Those wishing to participate in our carpool either as drivers or passengers will gather by the Panera on Wisconsin Avenue by the Tenleytown Metro Station at 11 a.m. Passengers will give their drivers $5. Those wishing to drive directly to Great Falls should plan to be at the Tavern by 11:45 to rendezvous with the carpoolers. Everyone should expect to pay the $20/vehicle admission fee at the entrance to Great Falls unless you or someone else in your vehicle has a Park Pass. (Historically, most vehicles in our carpool have included someone with a Pass.)
Bring beverages, lunch, mud-worthy hiking boots, and the $5 Adventuring trip fee, and dress in layers.

**ONLINE** Mindfulness Meditation with Hugh Byrne
**NOW ONLINE**
The weekly Sunday morning (10:30 am to 12 noon) class begins with a welcome, short reflection on an aspect of the teachings, and includes an arriving meditation (15 minutes) that will often incorporate poems and may end with a reflection or question.
The opening meditation is followed by an invitation to each person to share their name and a few words (for example, what is alive for them right now or what their intention is for the class or the day). The sharing has been a powerful support to help welcome new people, get to know each other, and build community/sangha.
Following a brief period of mindful stretching/movement, we finish with a longer meditation (25-30 minutes) and final reflections on the teachings, sharing, Q&A, and announcements. Class participants are welcome to stay and engage with other members of the community or adjourn to a neighboring restaurant or coffee shop.
This space is inclusive, everyone is welcome, and we invite you to bring with you all aspects of yourself.

One of the truths we most regularly forget is that if we are at war with ourselves, we can’t feel love and connection with our world. This talk looks at the genesis of the “Trance of Unworthiness” and how the wings of mindfulness and heartfulness can dissolve the trance and reveal the loving awareness that is our essence Being.
**Please watch this 55-min video (try 1.25X speed) before joining the discussion:**
[https://youtu.be/vFr_zQCUMD4?si=0bf7DttQV9NxBY3m](https://youtu.be/vFr_zQCUMD4?si=0bf7DttQV9NxBY3m)
If more than 10 people join the discussion, we will break out into smaller groups. **(max 10 people per group)**
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
1. **Feeling "not enough" often pulls us away from the beauty of now. How can we help each other remember that we are already worthy?**
2. **We often hide our true selves behind busy schedules or social masks. What great things might happen if we felt safe enough to be authentic?**
3. **Pausing before we react helps us choose wisdom over impulse. How can we make more space for these quiet moments in our fast-paced lives?**
4. **Real change only happens once we accept ourselves as we are right now. How does being kind to ourselves help us grow together?**
5. **Naming a difficult feeling helps us manage it with more ease. How might acknowledging our shared hurdles make us a stronger community?**
6. **Looking past our defenses helps us see the goodness in everyone. How can we better celebrate the shared humanity in those around us?**
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
To provide an enjoyable experience for fellow participants, here are three ground rules during discussion events:
1. Step up and step back. (If you feel that you’ve been talking too much, step back to listen more. If you feel that you’ve been relatively quiet, step up to share your perspective or ask a question)
2. Listen to understand, not to respond.
3. Be open-minded and value differences.

Walk to Run (build your movement routine)
Having a running routine that you actually enjoy and stick with takes more than a new year’s resolution and a new pair of shoes.
You’ve got to build your body up to handle it without misery or injury, figure out how to fit it into your busy schedule, and learn how to motivate and discipline yourself so you actually stick with it.
*So let’s walk before we run!*
Join your fellow explorers on Saturday for a walk and talk. (talking optional!)
It’s a time to connect and share tips with each other related to starting a walking/running routine, getting motivated, finding exercise partners, or whatever else is on your mind.
We’ll plan to walk for about an hour around the lake on a flat gravel trail.
**SAFETY NOTES**
1. Walking, just like running or any physical activity, may result in injury. Please dress for the weather, prepare your body properly, and consult your doctor prior to participation.
2. If you’ve never met anyone else attending, please bring a friend or take whatever steps you need to feel safe at this, or any, Meetup event.
