Building a Scanning Tunneling Microscope - Electrical Systems Rebuild & Test
***In Person Location:*** Rockville Library, second floor meeting room (Collaboration Room 4).
We are experimenting with a new virtual join link - [https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers](https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers)
If you can make it in person, that's always recommended!
We've identified a flawed powerline component we, if it comes soon enough we will solder it in, and troubleshoot downstream electronics to see if any other components are busted (following a wiring mishap). We've had this component 'blow out' before and fixing it then we sufficient, so hopefully we get lucky again. The component however is currently very delayed, so until that comes we might need to focus on a backlog of documentation development.
Our community is building (and documenting for other teams) how to build a scanning tunneling microscope using a mix of common and 3D printed parts. This will allow us to scan and visualize a single atom - an ambitious we are doing over the course of a few months.
The MoCo Makers community is one of the most innovative and competent groups in Maryland, and we've done everything from [publishing cancer research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38136356/), to [launching products](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gotim/cozy-curvy-multi-contour-pillow), [winning grants](https://covidinfocommons.datascience.columbia.edu/awards/2014255), and inspiring thousands.
Now our biggest challenge yet has appeared. We are building a Scanning Tunneling Microscope, that will allow us to scan and visualize single atoms.
Does it sound hard? Perhaps.. However! I have every confidence that we are now operating at a level were we can take on this mean, cross-functional project. We continue to build on our past successes, and a key technology we previously applied was increasing the signal of small voltages using OpAmps - which we did during our custom pH Probe project - [https://www.mocomakers.com/ph-probe/](https://www.mocomakers.com/ph-probe/) \- That technology is exactly what we need to get this machine working\, and at a high precision\!
To get a better idea of what we are doing, see our reference project here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g)
All starting CAD, code, and reference files should exist. However, let's be the first Maker community to document the build process and share it with learners around the world.
We have a bit over $2,000 in materials costs, so if you want to sponsor this project, and get banners at events with 20K attendees, and access to our email broadcast of 30K members, please contact matt@mocomakers.com
We are also open to university, lab, or community partnerships so feel to reach out if you want to be part of this project.
Together, we can do incredible things.

FOR WOMEN: The Moment Men Decide What Actually Drives the Swipe
****If online dating feels oddly exhausting, itās not you. Youāre just investing in the wrong moment.****
For Women: The Moment Men Decide What Actually Drives the Swipe
Quick thoughtā¦
If youāre ready to buy a car, you go on Carvana. You look closely. You invest time.
Why?
Because if you like it and youāre ready, itās actually available to you.
But you wouldnāt walk up and down your street studying your neighborsā cars, overthinking every detail, wondering if maybe someday theyād let you buy one.
That would be exhausting. Rrrright?!
Online dating often works the same way and no one ever explains that part. We end up over investing time, energy, and thought in places where decisions are actually made much faster and much earlier than we think.
Listen sister, this is not about trying harder.
Itās about seeing differently.
Before our Ugly Sweater Christmas Party, weāre hosting a FUN, playful, eye opening conversation just for women.
Weāll break this down in real time and yes, weāll actually look at profiles together in a no judgment way.
Bring your cell phone, sister. This is interactive, practical, and meant to make you laugh while learning something that immediately changes how you approach online dating.
Come one hour early.
Insight first.
Sweaters after.
Weāll keep this small so it stays interactive.
Weāre not fixing you.
Weāre fixing the lens.

Monuments and Memorials Photo Safari
⢠What we'll do
Learn how to take great pictures BEFORE you go on that expensive trip! And we will teach you how to use your camera IN THE FIELD, not in a classroom! Join our standard Monuments and Memorials workshop, offered Wednesdays and Saturdays, in which the instructor takes you to some of DCās most popular attractions: White House, Lafayette Park, the Einstein, Lincoln, Korea, and Vietnam Three Servicemen Memorials, and finally to Union Station, where you learn to make all the moving people DISAPPEAR! Remember, it was Confucius who said: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do, and I understand." At Washington Photo Safari, we help you "do " and understand! That is why our motto is "See. Click. Learn."
This $71 Safari (a 20% discount from the regular $89 price) begins with a 45-minute travel photography orientation, giving you basic tips in composition, F-stops and shutter speeds, portraiture, and interior photography. While you are taking pictures, you receive hands-on guidance on how to make those images even better! Advanced and smartphone photographers will appreciate the instructorās extensive knowledge of the best camera angles in DC. This is suggested as a preliminary course before taking special safaris. Open to any photographers at any skill level with any camera, phone, or tablet. Transportation from site to site is provided by the instructor.

Again, this is a free and relatively informal, ritual-free secular celebration near the winter solstice.
Background if Humanlight is New to You
Humanlight a secular holiday that celebrates Reason, Compassion, and Hope -- and brings people together to recognize the passing of one year as we look forward to a new one.Established by the New Jersey Humanist Network in 2001 HumanLight provides a specifically Humanist celebration with a sense of belonging that families and friends can enjoy near Christmas and the northern Hemisphere's winter solstice as a celebration of "a Humanist's vision of a good future."
Itās an event to Illuminating Humanism's Positive Secular Vision that the HumanLight organization promotes to āilluminate Humanism's positive secular visionā and as the AHA said in a 2009 announcement ā āaffirm the positive values of humanism during the time period of the ātraditionalā winter holidays.ā Itās just a small, fun step towards a new tradition and something to make this December a little bit fuller time for non-believer.

In Person Event: The Secrets to Mental Health
Mental Health, how do you understand it? How can you improve it?
How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself.
Have you ever suffered from a traumatic experience, a deep loss or been through a painful breakup? Has your ability to communicate suffered as a result? And after that, even though you "moved on" did you find that things were never quite the same? Have you ever looked at childhood photos, or reminisced your early life and wondered where that happiness and spark went?
Are your emotions out of your own control? Have you ever felt, even if you arenāt aware of it, that possibly you are getting in your own way of your happiness and success? How does this affect your self-confidence?
Find out what is at the root of all stress, anxiety, depression and self-doubt. Find out how and why you hold yourself back from achieving your goals and having the life you have dreamed of. As soon as you learn what is at the root of these unwanted conditions, youāll see it is something you can DO something about. You will not be labeled or categorized at this MeetUp.
This group is hosted by the Dianetics and Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.

Curating Confidence: Crafting Your Vision for the Year Ahead
Step into 2026 with intention, clarity, and a creative practice designed to help you see yourself more clearly. In this special Confidence Lab session, weāll explore confidence as something you can curate - through the choices you make, the qualities you amplify, and the story you choose to step into.
Weāll start with a short guided reflection to surface the traits, habits, and energies you want to nurture in the coming year. Then, using collage materials selected specifically for this workshop, youāll translate those insights into a visual composition that represents the version of yourself youāre ready to grow toward.
This isnāt about resolutions or perfection. Itās about crafting a grounded, imaginative vision of your next chapter - one that feels honest, energizing, and fully yours.
All materials are provided. Just bring yourself (and a friend) and a willingness to explore what confidence can look like for you in 2026.
