Nights are long. Day light is short. And in the deep caverns below the Earth, the great Goddess gives birth to the Sun-Child! We gather to mark this sacred event and celebrate Winter Solstice. The formal ceremony will culminate with us lighting a Yule-fire in a Cauldron, symbolising the returning of the Sun-child, where the Cauldron traditionally represents the womb of the Goddess. **GRADE**: **Beginner** – c.18km / 11 miles circular walk through beautiful and historic Hampshire downland (around 4.5 hours of walking time) with a couple of hills, plus additional distance if you choose to explore the Christmas market afterwards. We start the hike in historic Winchester, founded by the Romans near a major Iron Age fort, rising to capital city status of Alfred the Great’s Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and home of the resplendent Winchester Cathedral, the last resting place of may notable figures including author Jane Austen. Leaving the city's picturesque streets, we follow the beautiful River Itchen and climb up to St Catherine’s Hill, the Iron Age hillfort, which offers sweeping views back over the city. The route then takes us across Hampshire downland before descending into ancient watermeadows. Making our way back up onto the downs with distant views of the Cathedral, we then descend past the ancient Hospital of St Cross, an area said to have inspired John Keat's 'Ode to Autumn', along the watermeadows past Winchester College and to the bright lights of the famous Winchester Cathedal Christmas market. The Pagan observance of winter solstice reminds us that even at the coldest time of year, the turning has already begun. We celebrate this cosmic promise of renewal, the quiet peace that this time of dormancy holds, and the hope that sustains us through winter's depths. Lindsay River is a long-time member of New Unity, and has been a pagan since 1975. She has followed different spiritual paths within that broad umbrella, taught workshops and classes, and trained individual seekers. Walk length 10miles/16km approx. Linear. A chance to explore a section of the Wandle Trail from Wandsworth to Carshalton. The Wandle trail is a walking route following the river Wandle from Wandsworth to Croydon. Its was heavily industrialised for many years with water mills but is now largely a nature trail with a number of nature reserves as well as some more urban sections. The 21st December is the Winter Solstice and the shortest day of the year and is marked with various festivals and we may see some Pagan ones at the end pub. We will have a short pack lunch stop close to Abbey Mills which has shops and a cafe and is also the site of a Grade II listed watermill. We can at the end visit some pubs in Carshalton including 'The Hope' which has a great selection of real ale and craft beers. Carshalton has various transport routes back into central London. Lunch and Finish Please bring a packed lunch and water for the walk. The walk should finish before 4.30pm and include a pack lunch stop, however the time may be slightly earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace. Meeting and Transport Meet outside Wandsworth town rail station for the walk to start at 11am. The station is in zone 2 and can be accessed with trains from Waterloo or Clapham Junction. Doors open at 12pm to begin setting up, but we aim to start the feast between 12:30pm and 1pm. Come hungry, come friendly, and come ready to connect. Card games will be available too! We worship the GOD that LOVES US! We understand that god is an energy and it lives in us as us.
