Hell: Cantos XXV - XXVIII
This month we’ll look at cantos 25 - 29, with emphasis on Ulysses and Muhammed. These cantos are pretty meaty; major characters include Ulysses, Muhammad, Bertran de Born, and, indirectly, Boniface VIII.
What is the sin of the evil counsellors?
How do the sinners of canto 27 differ from those of canto 26?
What is the significance of the appearance of Guido da Montefeltro?
How does Dante step up his attack on the Church?
What is the impact of Bertran de Born?
Intro to Roleplaying Games: The Witch is Dead!
*Interested in DND and tabletop roleplaying games (RPGs)? Come join this beginner-friendly single-session adventure! **No previous experience required. Dice, pencils, and printouts will be provided. Just bring yourself!*** For details, please visit our [Discord](https://discord.gg/BXuCkPTjmz).
*Note: We will be playing in a food court, and as such a purchase of food and/or drink is expected to support the establishment.*
In the **Witch is Dead**, you'll play as a vengeful witch's familiar. With only your meagre magical abilities (and limited understanding of humans), you have to cooperate as a team to hunt down the Witch Hunter and revive your Witch before the Full Moon!
For newer players, the simplified one-page ruleset makes this an excellent intro to telling stories with dice. For all players, the randomly determined setting and plot twists makes for great improv practice thanks to the lower-stakes, self-contained story, without the pressure of playing human characters or a longer term campaign.
*The full rules can be found here (free):* [https://gshowitt.itch.io/the-witch-is-dead](https://gshowitt.itch.io/the-witch-is-dead)

**Game Master:** Nick (He/Him)
Nick, has been a Dungeon Master for 10 years, experienced in many mainstream and indie RPG systems. Outside of RPGs, Nick has several years of theatre experience, being an actor in his youth and continuing his studies even now. He is upbeat and theatrical, standing and acting out dramatic action sequences and quiet emotional scenes. More than anything, Nick always tries his best to deliver an experience, something that will be a special memory for everyone.
**What is 5th Edition and how does it differ from 5.5 Edition?**
Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition is an older version that was released in 2017 where 5.5 is the most current edition (released in 2024) with some changes to game mechanics. Most third party campaigns are made for 5th edition mechanics. So if you would like to play any D&D campaigns prior to 2024 (the majority of them) 5th edition would be your go-to! If you are interested in the 5.5 Edition we have a Dragon Delves learn-to-play series available as well.
Due to the limited spaces available for this event, we will not be issuing refunds for this event **less than 48 hours before the event**. Be sure to purchase the ticket for the correct date.

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for January is "Chemistry"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 7:00 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!

Humanist Program
Our January program is privileged to have Kristen Tregar as our speaker. Ms. Tregar is the co-author with John de Lancie (the actor who portrayed the character Q on Star Trek next generation) of a radio play depicting the events surrounding the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. The trial decided the issue of some of the Dover school district board members attempting to insert creationism disguised as "intelligent design" into the 9th grade biology curriculum. She will discuss the trial and the process of writing the play. (Bob Leonhard has seen the play and it is riveting and tense). Ms. Tregar's bio is below:
Kristen Tregar is a dramaturg, director, playwright, and theatre teacher. She earned her Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the UC San Diego and UC Irvine joint program. In addition, she has a MS in Forensic Science from City University of New York- John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a MA in Educational Theatre from New York University- Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In 2013, in collaboration with Irish colleagues, she founded *The Ireland Project*, an intercontinental devised theatre work with high school students in New York and Tallaght, Ireland. Her original short story "Far From Here" was recently published in *Stay Awhile Longer: More Scenes From Temecula Valley*. She has two rescued dogs (Kira and Harry) and she rides, competes, and foxhunts with her horses, Andromache and Baker Street Irregular.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
