For our June meet-up, we will be welcoming Rik Hepworth, who will be delivering a talk on Azure Virtual Networks for developers Cloud was supposed to save us, but those dastardly networks followed us there! So many projects in the cloud now demand that we keep our traffic within the corporate network. But what does that mean for our applications, and how much do we need to understand as developers? Can’t we just leave it to the networking team? Let’s run through the fundamentals: stuff like DNS and address spaces, that are easy to mess up if you’re not paying attention. Let’s examine what’s meant by ‘hub and spoke’ or ‘split horizon DNS’. This isn’t a session for network professionals who already build and operate corporate systems at scale; this is a session for the developers who need to make sure their applications are going to work, who may not have spent years configuring switches and managing infrastructure, and who just need to know enough to get the job done and avoid the potholes on the journey. **Food** We have a selection of food available including Vegan options but if you'd like to know more please drop one of our organisers a message before the event via the group message forum. TOG will be open on Tuesday evenings from 19:00 to 21:30 for a general Open House event. Expect to find members and visitors in the space up to all sorts of activities. The goal of this group is simple: to support and encourage each other to write more (myself included). I love writing short stories, but too often life gets in the way and I find excuses not to do it. This monthly group gathers together on the last Tuesday of every month in the lovely *Third Space* cafe in Smithfield to share and get feedback on our work. We’ll each get the chance to share an extract from a piece we’ve written, read it aloud and get feedback (in a nice quiet creative space). Any form of writing is great – whether screenwriting, poetry, flash fiction or something else. We pride ourselves in promoting a really friendly, safe space to share freely, but if you’d prefer to listen for the first while, that’s cool too. We are hosting an open **TouchDesigner** meetup with demos, hands-on learning, and space to share work with others using the software. Are you a beginner fursuit maker who wants to learn the craft? Are you into electronics and want to figure out how to make your LED strips emit custom patterns? Or maybe you want to talk on the radio with your fluffy friends? No matter how big or small, fluffy or simple the project is, bring it in to us for a social, fluffy event for all cats, dogs, wolves, foxes, and even protogens or any other species known. All you need to take part is an idea that you want to bring to life. The furry maker night will run every first week of the month. This is not a taught class, more like an informal working group of self-directed makers. While you can bring your fursuit in, either to work on it as a project or for repairs, it is heavily discouraged to wear them inside the space. Accessories such as tails are also discouraged for safety reasons. We are looking forward to seeing every fur in our space.

Most people use LLMs by feel: ask a question, read the answer, decide whether it “seems good,” and move on. That works for casual use. It does not work when you are building software, automating workflows, writing important documents, or relying on AI for anything that needs to be repeatable. In this talk, we’ll look at how to improve and evaluate the inputs and outputs of LLMs using practical measurement techniques. We’ll cover how prompt changes affect results, how to compare outputs, how to build simple evaluation sets, and how math-based methods like similarity scoring can help you move beyond guesswork. This will be beginner-friendly, so even if you don't know anything about AI, you should get something out of it. However, this will be a little more technical than our intro talks. You do not need to be an AI researcher, but programmers and technically curious attendees will get a lot out of it. We’ll cover: * Why “it looks good” is not enough * How to improve prompts by changing the input, context, and constraints * How to compare LLM outputs more systematically * Basic evaluation techniques for accuracy, consistency, and usefulness * How embeddings, cosine similarity, and scoring can help evaluate results * Where automated evaluation works — and where humans still need to stay in the loop By the end, you’ll have a practical mental model for treating LLMs less like magic and more like systems you can test, measure, and improve.
