NewDay is a London-based consumer credit technology company on a mission to help people move forward with credit. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in King's Cross, NewDay operates a highly scalable in-house digital platform that powers credit products for close to six million UK customers — from their own brands like Aqua, Fluid, and Bip (the UK's first digital-only credit card) to co-branded partnerships with household names including John Lewis & Partners, Amazon, and AO.
What sets NewDay apart is its proprietary credit decisioning capability, which allows it to responsibly say yes to customers often underserved by traditional high street banks. Over the past year the business has grown gross receivables to over £5 billion — up 21% year on year — and reported a 30% increase in underlying profit before tax, underpinned by a string of major deals including the acquisition of the Argos Financial Services card portfolio for £754 million in early 2025.
Backed by Cinven and CVC, and with KKR joining as a new strategic partner in 2025, NewDay is one of the UK's most ambitious and fast-growing fintech businesses — combining deep data science, modern engineering, and a clear social purpose to reshape the future of consumer credit.
DSOLG April Event - No AI Without APIs
## Details
Welcome to the DevSecOps London Gathering April Event on Wednesday 29 April! We bring you two speakers, as well as the usual conversations, pizza and beer!
📍 **Hosted at Civo Tech Junction, 1st Floor, 32-37 Cowper Street, London, EC2A 4AW**
📅 **Wednesday, 29 April**
🕕 **6:00–8:00 PM**
## **Talk** **Abstracts:**
**Talk 1**
APIs are the hidden infrastructure that connects everything, like the plumbing of the modern age – though much like plumbing, **you don't realise you've got a problem until it’s too late**…
This is doubly true for the AI era. It doesn't matter if you're orchestrating agents through OpenClaw, Warcraft 3 or MCP – **APIs remain the way AI escapes the bounds of the chat box into the real world**.
But this new modality of APIs unfortunately didn't ship with more security. We’ve spent years lumping APIs into “web security” and calling it a day. As AI adoption accelerates, **API abuse is becoming the easiest way to escalate impact**: broken object-level auth, excessive data exposure, workflow manipulation, and agent overreach. **So what actually matters and how are attackers exploiting it?**
Join **Dr Katie Paxton-Fear** as we explore API hacking as its own discipline, in the AI era. No generic web security theory. Instead, you’ll walk away understanding:
* What makes **APIs uniquely vulnerable**
* The bugs attackers **actually look for**
* How **AI-driven workflows** expand impact
* How to **test your own APIs effectively**
**Katie's bio**
Dr Katie Paxton-Fear is a hacker and security advocate at Semgrep – she used to make applications, and now she breaks them. A former developer, she sees security vulnerabilities as small mistakes by overstressed developers, and wants to find ways to make their life easier while making sure that we are all secure. She's found vulnerabilities in everything from the military to AI, in her own words 'without really knowing what I was doing'. She is passionate about giving back to the security community, delivering security training, writing and sharing her security research, and also through her YouTube channel – where she teaches almost 100,000 subscribers how to follow in her footsteps! She combines easy-to-understand explanations with key technical details, turning security into something everyone can understand and engage with. She's been featured as an expert in the Wall Street Journal, BBC News, ZDNet, The Daily Swig, Vodafone and more.
**Talk 2**
APIs are the hidden infrastructure powering modern cloud systems connecting services, platforms, and now increasingly, AI agents.
In the AI era, APIs are no longer just consumed by users, they're being called, chained, and orchestrated by autonomous systems at scale. Whether it's agent workflows, microservices, or cloud-native platforms, APIs are the bridge between intelligent systems and real-world actions.
However, while adoption has accelerated, security has not kept pace. Many organisations still treat API security as an extension of traditional web security, overlooking critical gaps introduced through architecture, identity design, and DevSecOps practices.
So where are things actually going wrong?
Join me to explore how modern cloud architectures unintentionally expose APIs from misconfigured gateways and over-permissioned identities to weak trust boundaries across services. The session will also examine how AI-driven workflows amplify these risks, turning small design flaws into large-scale vulnerabilities.
**Sriram's Bio**
Sriram Kumar is a Solution Designer with multiple years of experience in cloud and DevOps engineering, specialising in Microsoft Azure. He has a strong background in designing and securing cloud-native architectures, including API Management, identity-driven access, and enterprise-scale infrastructure.
Sriram has worked across multiple organisations delivering secure, scalable solutions, with hands-on experience in Cloud networking, CI/CD pipelines, and DevSecOps practices. His work often involves solving real-world challenges around API security, cloud governance, and system resilience in complex environments.
Beyond his professional work, Sriram actively contributes to the community through NGO initiatives and mentoring students, supporting them in building careers in cloud and technology.
With a practical, architecture-first approach, Sriram focuses on bridging the gap between development, operations, and security, helping teams build systems that are not only functional but secure by design.

This is a **leisurely walk** designed for socialising and sight-seeing, not a race! We’ll be moving at a comfortable pace with plenty of opportunities for photos, if needed. Besides is nice to stay active in moderation and I personally needed a walk at weekend!

THE WYE VALLEY & THE FOREST OF DEAN
**Join Backabush on the bank holiday for some clifftop, riverside and ancient woodland hiking with historic hotel accommodation in the heart of beautiful Chepstow town.**
Number of nights - 3.
£285 - Shared twin room
£385 - Private single room
We have booked our group into a charming 3 star Welsh hotel which has all the modern comforts you would expect whilst retaining the charm and character of a 16th century coaching inn. Located right in the centre of town and just a few minutes walk from the train station this is the perfect location to base ourselves for a weekend of exploring.
There are also many great places to eat in Chepstow around our accommodation. We will organise reservations at some local restaurants so that our group can dine together each night and have a sociable evening after our day on the trails.
From Chepstow we will have some stunning walks following the River Wye straight from the door, as well as the opportunity to explore the view points, villages and ancient woodland of the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean only a short drive away. Here are some of the local highlights we hope to include in our itinerary of hikes...
**Wynd Cliff, Tintern Abbey, the Devil's Pulpit and Brockweir -** The classic 'Grand Tour' of the Wye Valley, including the magnificent vista of the meandering river from the 'Eagles Nest' on top of the precipitous Wynd Cliff. We will also get a chance to visit Tintern, where the famous abbey is considered to be the most beautiful and superbly situated monastic ruin in the country.
**Chepstow Castle, Wintour's Leap, Lancaut and Tidenham Chase**
This lovely walk is not challenging but offers splendid views across a dramatic stretch of the Wye. We can set out on foot straight from our hotel to follow the Wye upstream to where the river makes a great curve around the Lancaut peninsula. We can take in the spectacular viewpoint of Wintour's Leap and return to Chepstow to visit the Medieval Castle.
**Symonds Yat Rock, the Hand Pulled Ferry and the Wobbly Bridge** \- Symonds Yat is one of the most iconic and beautiful locations in the entire Wye Valley and a fantastic opportunity to watch Peregrine Falcons\. There is the novel opportunity of crossing the Wye on a hand pulled barge\, the trail then winds up past King Arthurs Caves to an Iron Age Hill Fort\.
We also hope to find time to visit the some other local beauty spots like Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and the Forest of Dean Sculpture trail. Join us for a weekend of superb hiking in this lovely valley. A perfect weekend away! :D

Choose Your Movie: THE SHEEP DETECTIVES vs HOKUM at Cinemark Stoneridge!
Join us as we get together to see your choice of two VERY different movies – one sweet and wholesome – the other a terrifying folklore horror! Option 1 is the fun whodunnit-action-comedy-mystery led by Hugh Jackman, THE SHEEP DETECTIVES! Option 2 is the top-reviewed supernatural-horror-thriller starring Adam Scott, HOKUM! Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event:
THE SHEEP DETECTIVES: Every night a shepherd reads aloud a murder mystery, pretending his sheep can understand. When he is found dead, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it. The film is directed by Kyle Balda and take a look at this ensemble cast: Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Braun, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau and Emma Thompson and the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O'Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein and Rhys Darby. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyZI5oM6hWk
HOKUM: In this film, a horror writer visits an Irish inn to scatter his parents' ashes, unaware the property is said to be haunted by a witch. It is written/directed by Damian McCarthy stars Adam Scott, Peter Coonan, David Wilmot, Florence Ordesh and Austin Amelio. Hokum premiered to rave reviews at this year’s SXSW Festival and is being release by Neon. It is earning a stellar 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which calls it, “A classic haunted house story enriched with atmospheric folklore and perfectly-timed shocks!” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCIK_MPyhc
PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing of both films and will meet inside the theater lobby about 20 minutes before showtime. If the showtimes work out, we’ll try to get both groups together for a bite before the shows! Complete details and showtime will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer.
Look forward to seeing you there, Dan

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.

• Show up and try it out.
• Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process
• Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/).
• Attend orientation in advance.
• At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility.
• Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM.

The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
