Wine Not? (Women Only)
Wine Not? (Women Only)
Wine Not? is a women-only gathering before the Balancers Saturday social. Most attendees come solo, so it’s an easy and welcoming place to meet people and settle in before the night gets busier. London can make meeting new people feel awkward, especially if you're coming alone. This early social creates a comfortable environment where you can chat, laugh, and get to know a few friendly faces first. Expect a relaxed atmosphere, a few light games, and plenty of time to connect naturally. At **7.30 pm the main Balancers social begins**, and the room fills as over **150 people usually join the night**. Wine Not? naturally flows into the rest of the evening, so you’re welcome to stay and enjoy the full experience. Coming solo is completely normal. Our hosts will be there to help everyone feel comfortable, included, and connected from the start. **Check out our past events here:** **[https://www.instagram.com/_balancers/](https://www.instagram.com/_balancers/)** **Want to stay in the loop? Journey to the End of the Night (urban chase game)
**SocialSportsMix have teamed up with London Journey for this creative urban game!** **NOTE: You must pre-register** **at [https://londonjourney.org/](https://londonjourney.org/) to actually play!** FYI, there are **141 players** registered to play on the main site!! (correct as of: 16/04/26) Journey is a free volunteer-run interactive urban chase game in which hundreds of players traverse the city, completing challenges at checkpoints, guided by checkpoint agents from fairytales, while evading chasers. Get caught and become a chaser yourself, or make it to the end of the night without getting caught to win! # ✨ Welcome to Fairy Academy ✨ Tonight, your magic awakens. You have been chosen as a Fairy Trainee — a spark-bearer, glowing with wild, untamed fairy dust. You’ve felt it already: the air crackling when you run, laughter spilling out around you, the shimmer just under your skin. But listen carefully. You are not a fairy yet... Raw fairy dust is volatile. It flares bright… and then it burns out. To claim your wings, you must survive the Five Trials of Fairy Academy. Each test will sharpen your magic. Each checkpoint will push you closer to transformation. Pass all five, and you will rise crowned with your Fairy Title, your power steady and eternal. But the night is not empty. Lurking in the dark are the Dropouts — former trainees who lost their light. They no longer create magic of their own. Now they hunt it. If they catch you, they will siphon your fairy dust to feed their fading glow. Lose your spark… and you join them. Run bright. Guard your glow. Graduate, or be consumed! **————————————————————————** **\- WHERE/WHEN** The course, which begins at Jubilee Gardens will be approximately 9km and may take 2 to 4 hours to complete (accounting for interference). Check-in will be from 4:00-4:30pm and the game will begin at 5pm. Do your best to be on time. **\- How do I play?** Register here: https://londonjourney.org Full rules of gameplay will be presented there. **\- Where has it been played?** The game has been played in cities all over the world (see [https://ichaseyou.com](https://ichaseyou.com/)), including in London in 2007-2009 and 2024-25. Join us for 2026! **\- Why is the game free\, is there a catch?** We organise Journey to the End of the Night because we are passionate about helping Londoners to get out of their comfort zones, explore the city, get creative and immerse themselves in imagination. We love doing it and spend several months preparing the game. It is important to us to be able to keep it free to players so that it is accessible to anyone. That said, we do incur costs for the game materials, maps, ribbons, etc (typically a few hundred pounds) so if you're able to support us with a [donation](https://buymeacoffee.com/londonjourney) of £5 it really helps! [https://buymeacoffee.com/londonjourney](https://buymeacoffee.com/londonjourney) **\- Are there ways I can get involved before the event?** If you're interested in being a part of the creative volunteer community organising Journey, please visit [LondonJourney.org](http://londonjourney.org) and fill out our volunteer interest form or email LondonJourney24@gmail.com and we'll get in touch! **-What should I wear?** Comfy clothes/shoes for running Theme (time travel) related costume - optional **-What should I bring?** Water A charged smartphone or good sense of direction

**FI NEWSLEARNS -** A monthly, in-person session where we gather to examine the week’s biggest headlines — scrutinising sources, narratives, and editorial decisions as unofficial editors of an open-source newsroom. **THE CONCEPT** Inspired by *the open-source newsroom model*, this **meetup** brings that spirit into real life. We create a space for honest, constructive analysis of how the news is covered and how the cycle impacts our interests. **WHO IT’S FOR** Originally built for journalists, it’s open to everyone. Media professionals, researchers, students, and curious members of the public — all perspectives are welcome. No credentials needed — just a critical eye. **WHAT WE DO** Each session, participants step into the role of FI editors and journalists. Together, we examine real headlines, using the FI platform live to improve news literacy and encourage civil, collaborative discussion in a non-judgemental environment. **BEFORE ATTENDING;** Before attending, we ask participants to review the monthly news cycle and come prepared with 3–4 editorial observations. These can include red flags (e.g. bias, weak sourcing, misleading framing) or green flags (e.g. strong evidence, balanced reporting, transparency) to discuss with the group.
Good Slut—Conversation & Book Signing With Author Zoe Strimpel
Good Slut—Conversation & Book Signing With Author Zoe Strimpel
If an alien landed in Britain of 2026, it might well conclude that things have never been worse for women. That to be a woman in the neoliberal, post-sexual revolution West is just a vale of tears: bodily, emotionally, reproductively, and socially. Except, that's not at all the truth, is it? In Good Slut, Zoe Strimpel argues the exact opposite, that things have never been better for women, and the fact that this is a taboo shows how far off the right piste we're going. She takes aim at what she sees as a culture of female victimhood, arguing instead that women in the modern West enjoy unprecedented freedom—socially, sexually, and economically. The book is a forceful defence of the sexual revolution and a call to embrace agency, ambition, and desire without apology. It argues for a proud promiscuity: not just sexual, but in all other things too. This argument has sparked sharp disagreement. Critics have questioned whether Strimpel downplays the real costs of modern dating culture, from the effects of pornography and dating apps to the persistence of exploitation and dissatisfaction. Others argue that her dismissal of “victimhood” overlooks genuine problems—or that her vision of liberation risks collapsing into a defence of whatever currently exists. Join us for a candid conversation on sex, freedom, and the deeper ideas at stake: what does genuine independence actually require—and is modern culture helping us achieve it, or standing in the way?

April Meeting 1 - James (Percival Everett)
April Meeting 1 - James (Percival Everett)
In April's first meeting, we will read Percival Everett's 2024 book, *James.* The award-winning novel received both the Booker Prize in 2024 and the Pulitzer Prize in 2025. It is a fascinating retelling of a famed Mark Twain novel that many Americans read at school. 'A breathtakingly accomplished retelling of *The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn* from the point of view of the enslaved Jim, Everett's tour de force reclaims the character's voice from the literary margins with power, precision and dazzling wit.' -Waterstones 'A captivating response to Mark Twain’s classic that is both a bold exploration of a dark chapter in history and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit' -Booker Prize judges https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/173754979-james The meeting will take place at the Big Easy - Canary Wharf. So come along for some down-home American cooking as we delve into this acclaimed novel. N.B. We will be charging an event fee of £3, non-refundable, to discourage no-shows and contribute to the running costs of the group. Please only sign up if you intend to come along as space is limited to make for an effective discussion!

This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism") Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war). Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering? See you at Drunken Philosophy!

Welcome, readers! Our April read is **_Martyr!_ by Kaveh Akbar.** The story follows a young Iranian American poet grappling with grief, addiction, and the aching question of what makes a life meaningful. Drawn into an unexpected friendship with a terminally ill artist, he begins to confront faith, love, and the seduction of self-destruction. Lyrical, darkly funny, and emotionally piercing, the novel wrestles with beauty and despair in equal measure. It’s a story about longing—to be seen, to be forgiven, and to matter. Looking forward to discussing with everyone! We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **drinks must be purchased at the bar.** Happy reading! 📖
