Speak Fluent Wine: Learn How to Taste Like A Professional
**\*\*You must purchase a ticket [here](https://sommcircle.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=4002&club_id=650343&item_id=2926832). \*\***
Ever find yourself nodding along at a wine tasting, wishing you knew what to actually say — or even what to look for?
This is the evening that changes that.
Speak Fluent Wine is a hands-on tasting experience designed to teach you the exact framework wine professionals use to evaluate what's in the glass. You'll go from "I just know what I like" to understanding \*why\* you like it — and having the words to say so.
Here's what we'll cover:
?? Sight — What color and clarity reveal before the first sip
?? Nose — How to train your sense of smell and identify aromas with confidence
?? Palate — Decoding what your taste buds are picking up: sweetness, acidity, tannins, body, and finish
?? Structure — How the elements of a wine interact, including how acidity softens sweetness and tames tannins
??? Language — The vocabulary professionals use, demystified and made practical
Once we've broken down the framework, Total Wine's expert staff will lead a short guided tasting — putting everything you've just learned directly into practice.
Snacks and water will be provided. Cost is $25
No experience necessary. No judgement. Just great wine, a welcoming atmosphere, and the confidence you've been waiting to find.

Happy hour at Tap 99!
Meet us for Happy Hour!
Tap99 is a self pour beer bar with 99 Taps. Yes, they actually have 99. They have beer, cider, seltzer, and wine on tap.
Never been to a self pour bar? Here’s how it works, from their website: “To begin pouring, guests open a tab at our check-in desk using a credit or debit card and after showing an I.D. They then receive a pour card that is linked to their tab, that will keep track of what they have poured. Guests then insert the card into the card reader below any of the taps to begin pouring. Guests can pour a few ounces or a full glass of their favorite drink.” At the end you’ll be charged based on the pours you’ve gotten (prices are on the individual taps). They DO have food, and actual happy hour specials from 3-7!
They’re located across from Nat’s Park and as of right now there are no big events happening in that area on 5/28 so it shouldn’t be crazy packed. Closest metro stop is Navy Yard/Ballpark- exit the Half St exit.
Come and chill!
Hope to see ya! 🍻

1983 Chateau Margaux @ New Heights (Woodley Park) *POSTPONED*
Due to a last-minute international trip, I will be rescheduling this dinner, stay tuned for more info.
Mark Namdar, Olena Fedorenko and Executive Chef Jose Molina, former colleagues at the Graham Hotel in Georgetown, are now the new caretakers of New Heights — a tried and trusted name they never had an intention of changing. Mark, a native of Iran, considers Washington, DC “the land of opportunity”. He, the Ukrainian-born Olena and Jose, who’s from Bolivia, are veterans of the hospitality industry, and the trio is writing a new chapter for the restaurant, which reopened in January 2022.
Chef Jose started cooking at the age of 16. His mentors taught him to respect each ingredient, make everything with passion, and be as creative as he can possibly be. He knows that buying the best seasonal ingredients can make all the difference in the world. Growing up in Bolivia, Latin flavors had a powerful impact on him and were his gateway to international influences, helping him to become the chef he is today. He enjoys the theater of cooking, and the searing sound from a cast-iron skillet is music to his ears. He loves using all his senses to create a perfectly balanced dish.
The 1983 is certainly one of the most classic Château Margaux of the last forty years. The bouquet has developed well, it has become rich, complex and mature. On the palate, the impression remains of great power. balanced by remarkable freshness. We are starting to detect some variability among the bottles, but the magnums are consistently remarkable.'
We will enjoy a six-course offering, with a 3 oz pour of a 1983 Chateau Margaux. The ticket price is inclusive of the food, wine, tax, tip, etc. You will be able to add anything else you desire on your own tab.
The cost of the event is $175 and all guests must prepay to reserve their seat. Once paid, no refunds will be given but you can have somebody else come in your place.

Judgement of Paris - House Wine
This is the 50th Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris. Significantly, in 1976, California wines unexpectedly outperformed French wines in a blind tasting with nine French judges, challenging the perception that only French wines were of the highest quality. This event helped elevate the status of California wines on the global stage and is considered a pivotal moment in wine history.
House Wine, in Worthington, modestly, recreates that moment in history with a tasting both American and French wines in a fun, casual atmosphere. Come at 6:45, pay your fee at the register and join your friends for this "Judgey" tasting. https://www.wineenthusiast.com/culture/wine/the-judgment-of-paris-turns-40/
Arrive when you can and we'll have a table for gathering. Feel free to bring your own food as it is welcomed at this local gem or order from the newly opened Worthington Inn, or local favorites such as Dewey's, Everest, Jet, Worthington Tavern and The Whitney. Each person pays their tasting fee, typically $15, and gets their wine glass, then approximately five pours of the wines being served.
**Parking is tough**. Try the second lot behind House Wine accessed by the land by the back parking lot or the municipal lot one block north of House Wine.
**Waiver and Liability and Attendance Policy.** Participation by you and your guests means you agree to the Waiver of Liability and Attendance Policies on our Group Page. People who have two more or Attendance policy violations are subject to removal from the group.
Loose Tea Tasting
Please join Columbus Tea Lovers for a tasting of loose leaf teas at a private residence in Worthington. (The address will be sent out via private Meetup message a day ahead to those who have RSVP'd.)
June 20th is the Worthington Arts Festival so feel free to attend that event which is down the street in addition to the tea party.
For this tasting please bring a tea or tisane (an herbal brew that contains no tea leaves) does not come in a prepackaged tea bag. You can feel free to bring it pre-brewed in a carafe or thermos; please leave out the milk and sweetener as we will have some on hand to mix and match. We will have the kettle on and fillable single serve disposable tea bags if you would like to bring the tea leaves unbrewed and extra tea cups on hand as well.
We welcome you to bring snacks or desserts that are you enjoy pairing with tea. You can bring a chair if the day is nice in case we sit outside. There is a cat in the house, so be aware in case of allergies.
If you want to write in the chat what you plan to bring so we don't have a lot of the same thing, please do so!
Wine Tasting - Newcomers Night
This is "***New Members Night***." If you are one of the many folks on the fence about coming to your first wine tasting with the *Hilliard Wine Club*, this is the night to come. There will be many other new people, so you won't be alone. And the regulars will be there to help make you feel welcome. We're a relaxed and warm group. We hope to see you.
**SIDE NOTE:** New members are welcome to ALL our Friday night wine tastings, but this night is a special overture to those who don't want to feel that they are the only new person in the room. Don't worry. You won't be. And don't hesitate to RSVP to other events.
**OLD MEMBERS NOTE**: Hey Old Members! You're not excluded from this event. We expect to see you there to help make the new members feel welcome.
**Sample 4 different wines** this Friday for $15 (*Cash or Venmo only please*). Glasses are provided. Bring a snack to share. Bring a bottle to share if you care to. See all the details below for the Hilliard Wine Club Wine Tasting. In Person. In Real Life. Actual Wine from glass bottles with corks and everything.
**Wine**: Tastings will be $15 for four samples as always. And you are welcome to bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share with others. Participation in the wine tastings is optional. But since you’re going, I will buy enough wine to cover you. If you bring your own wine and do not participate in the tasting you will only pay $10 to cover the door charge.
**Parking**: There are several public parking lots near the Alive614 hall. Please be careful to NOT park in private parking lots. They do tow. Check Google maps to scope out your space. Anyone who is early could easily find a parking space on the street nearby.
**Glasses**: …will be provided. Please note that after the wine tasting, the glasses need to be returned to the boxes at the service table. Please be gentle, our glasses are fragile. Uh, they are made of glass!
**Food**: You are welcome to bring a snack to share. It is not required. Most people do though. If no one brings anything, there will be nothing.
**Code of Conduct**: Though mostly understood, it’s still worth mentioning. We don’t have rules per se, but we highly discourage the following topics of discussion because they are likely to incite anti-social responses - Sex, Politics, Religion. Please don’t mistake this as an attempt to limit your free speech rights but rather a guide to a place and time for appropriate discussions.
**Extra Wine**: After everyone has had their samples, we remove the pouring spouts and any remaining wine is poured freely to whomever wants it. I hate having leftover wine.
**Queen of Hearts**: The Queen of Hearts raffle is a fundraiser for the club and a Barnum and Bailey type extravaganza - minus the dancing ponies, clowns, and actual circus. Bring your ***cash*** as the Queen does not accept American Express or other plastic.
**After the lights go out**: After the last sip of wine, when we clean up and turn the lights out, if you still haven’t had enough of us, it is typical for a group to get together and go to a local eatery for food and/or drinks or coffee.
Again, We look forward to meeting new members and reuniting with old friends.
Sincerely, ***Paul Uttermohlen***,
**Red 1 Realty**

Feel Good Friday: POWER BALLAD at the Gateway Film Center + SHAKE NO. 8!
Join us as we get together to see Paul Rudd in the latest comedy-drama-musical from John Carney, POWER BALLAD! The film follows a washed-up wedding singer, a fading boy band singer and a stolen hit song. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. Power Ballad is written/directed by John Carney, the master of the modern musical and creative mind behind Once, Begin Again and Sing Street! It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor.
BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving." The film continues John Carney’s “long run of success with yet another charmer” and “a sharp, hopeful crowd-pleaser that strikes the right notes!”
SUMMER OF ICE CREAM, VOL 2: SHAKE NO. 8! Ranked the #1 Ice Cream Shop in Columbus, this is a perfect early stop on our Summer of Ice Cream! Their menu uses made-from-scratch recipes in an array of traditional, specialty and vegan shakes, hot cocoa, crepes, waffle sticks, specialty coffee & espresso, and more! Their specialty shakes are as delicious as they are over-the-top and they offer an extensive vegan menu! You can check out their full menu here: [https://www.shakeno8.com/menu.php](https://www.shakeno8.com/menu.php)
PLAN: Please purchase your ticket for the 6:45pm showing and we’ll meet in the upstairs lobby between 6:25 and 6:35pm! Advance ticket purchase is advised for this opening night showing! Once you have yours, please list your seat number in the Comments section of this event. We'll head to nearby Shake No. 8 immediately following the show!
Should be a fun one, Dan
