MAY 20, 533, PART TWO - MAN PLANS, THE GODS LAUGH
No sooner had the Javier party left, then the Bailey force discovered that three members of their civilian farming community (Jane, Marie, and Pearl) were not feeling well. They were weak, nauseous, and had the runs. The Clerics and Druid examined the afflicted, conferred, and opined that since everyone was eating the same food and water, food poisoning was not the culprit. Only the former farmers were ill, so the Healers believed that a change of diet was at fault. The adventurers had brought back a lot of game. While meat was a staple for the adventurers and their associates, it was a rarity for the farmers.
Curative magic (supplied by Harold and Froggy) could take care of the immediate problem and allow the trio to operate, but unless the underlying condition was corrected, the problem would reassert itself. Therefore Ro, who had been left in charge by Javier, redirected the adventurers and civilians from limbing the fallen trees to digging up the vegetable gardens of the abandoned village. (This had been on the long "to do when there is time" list.) Half the produce would be for short-term consumption, the other half transplanted into planters and the adjacent Bailey grounds. The adventurers stood guard while the civilians harvested, loaded the wagon, and returned to the Bailey. They then followed the trail to the forest.
The adventurers entered the woods to the left of the fallen trees and rejoined the trail once they were past the wreckage. Two hours of walking brought them to the path's terminus, the shore of a substantial lake. There had once been a cottage, a dock, some sheds, and a pottery workspace present, but all had been smashed to pieces. The growth of grass and weeds indicated that this destruction was not a recent incident. However, they did observe the heel of a footprint where the mud met the grass. The footprint was relatively new and the foot was of a child or a short-statured creature such as a gnome. They searched the nearby portion of the forest without discovering anything and headed back to the Bailey.
The night watch heard a series of loud screeches to the West and roused everyone. The cries came no closer and everyone except those on watch went back to bed.
MAY 21, 533 - RINSE & REPEAT
Twice as many farmers were sick the following morning. Harold and Froggy cast healing spells, rested, and then cast some more. The adventurers escorted the civilians on a return trip to the village to gather anything they had missed the previous day, then to the fields to harvest dandelions and other comestibles, and finally back to the Bailey. The group then returned to the lake to search for the person(s) who had left the footprint. They found additional signs that someone had been in the area not long ago, but nothing more concrete than that. They returned to the Bailey. The night was uneventful.
MAY 22, 533 - WHAT'S THE BUZZ?
The vegetable foraging had been successful and only a couple of civilians were having digestive problems, so Ro authorized the start of the limbing of the first of the fallen trees. This took the morning. In the afternoon the adventurers again returned to the lake. They weren't there long before the dog's barking alerted them to 11 giant wasps flying over the lake towards them. The party retreated into the forest as that would provide cover and slow the bugs down. The wasps followed. The two sides fought. The wasps were slain, but not before wounding Sioned, Luna, and Luka. Luka was also stung. Unlike most creatures, the poison of a wasp sting does not lead to death, but to a temporary paralyzation. The group improvised a stretcher and carried her (Luka) back to the Bailey. The rest of the day and night passed uneventfully.
