Tired of fighting internet strangers? Want to bring out the contentious side of you and enjoy verbal sparring? Look no further than the House of Common. We are a group of people who have been meeting every other Sunday to sharpen our intellect and maybe change the way we think. This is purely an exercise in rhetoric and you will be forced to take stances on things you possibly don’t want to believe in.
We don’t want nuanced views or neutral points, this is a debate club, not a reality club. The real world and our opinions are as make belive as a DnD game.
Today’s topic is:
Should we seek inner peace or actively reshape the world?
There are two trains of thought. We’ve been given conflicting moral stances growing up. There was Gandhi, who said “Be the change you want to see in the world” and Einstein who said, “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.” From social activism, climate activism to being a responsible citizen, we have an ethical and legal obligation to morality in this world. This means caring for the right causes, helping people in need and showing up with rage and fighting for our rights.

There is another train of thought where we strive for inner harmony over changing the outside environment. The message given to us by Buddhism, and Stoicism. Marcus Aurelius said “You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Lao Tzu said, “He who conquers others is strong; he who conquers himself is mighty.” We have the eastern philosophy advocating for inner strength and peace. This means, letting things be and allowing the world to flow as is. Every little act is a play by nature and the interference of nature from man creates conflict and disharmony in the universe. Suffering stems from attachment and desire to control the external. Peace lies in acceptance. Some individuals live in circumstances where inner resilience is the only available power.

Come battle it out at this debate, share your bizarre views and maybe even make a foe or two. Remember we don’t want nuanced views or neutral points.
