๐ STRADDIE CULTURAL ESCAPE: DREAMTIME STORIES & ISLAND VIBES! โจ
Details
RSVP by 21 Feb. Lets escape to Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island - the second-largest sand island in the world) for a day where ancient culture meets pristine coastline - See ya later Brissy, we're off to Straddie for a day for Dreamtime stories and crystal-clear island waters!
fyi * Having trouble RSVPing? Meetup may have updated - try logging out and back in, or delete and reinstall the app - seems to fix it!
Just a short ferry ride from Cleveland, Stradbroke Island (known by its traditional name Minjerribah - the second-largest sand island in the world) it'll feel like stepping into another world! We'll be taking the Hiace onto the vehicle ferry for the 50 minute crossing - like having our own locker room where we can stash our beach bags, towels and coolers while we're on the cultural tour, We'll be guided by proud Quandamooka custodians who've cared for this country for over 25,000 years, then spending the afternoon soaking up the islands famous beaches and laid-back coastal vibe.
YURA TOURS CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
Our day centres around the 'Sand Beneath My Feet' walking tour with Elisha, a proud Qandamooka woman who calls Minjerribah home. Elisha invites us to connect with Country through stories passed down through generations. We'll start with a traditional Welcome to Country before walking through coastal bushland where Elisha shares how her ancestors used the native plants and trees, from traditional medicines to food sources. The path emerges onto the beach for an easy walk to Adder Rock, a significant site where we'll hear the South Passage Creation Story while looking over Coral Sea towards Mulgumpin (Moreton Island). And if we're lucky with the seasons, there might be some bush tucker to taste along the way - Minjerribah is know for being plentiful!
๐ด BUILD-YOUR-OWN LUNCH
Here's the plan: while we're queuing for the ferry at Cleveland, we'll do a tailgate spread - breads, salads, meats, fruit - and we'll all build our own packed lunches. Everything gets stored in the onboard esky to keep it fresh through the morning, then after the cultural tour, we'll enjoy it in the shade nearby.
CYLINDER BEACH TIME
The afternoon is ours at Cylinder Beach, voted Qld's best beach twice, by Surf Life Saving Qld!. This is the island's most popular swimming spot for good reason - the water is a beautiful shade of turquoise, the sand is white and soft, and it's patrolled year-round so it's nice n safe if we fancy a swim.... or perhaps a casual beach walk along the white sands is your go-to, even a laze on the beach a while will be a treat!
Our morning Meet Up locations:
7.20 am @ Eagleby private residence for off-street parking (please have $7 on the day for our kind resident/member. Address is shared with attendees closer to event date. Return approx 6.35pm
7.30 am Beenleigh Train Station. Return approx 6.25 pm
8.20 am Cleveland Train Station. Return approx 5.45 pm (note: tis much easier finding a carpark at Cleveland Station than the Ferry Terminal, so parking at/near Cleveland Station is our best option for a stress free arrival for our pick-up spot :-)
