- Doors Open: Historic Don Jail and lunch!Riverdale Branch Library, Toronto, ONCAD 5.00
Historic Don Jail: I wasn't going to do two days of Doors Open but the Don Jail is not open every year and this is on my bucket list of places in Toronto. You have to see ONE building for Doors Open this is the one . There will be lines and it might take a few hours to get in. Be ready to wait and after we will go for lunch.....I did mention it's also haunted!
Historic Don Jail: The distinctive Italianate design of the historic Don Jail, initially used as a reform jail, was created by renowned architect William Thomas. The building remained open as a jail for 113 years, eventually closing in 1977. After years of stagnation, the property was purchased by Bridgepoint (now Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital), to be used as part of its new campus.
The Hospital has a 150-year history in Toronto's Riverdale community and completed the redevelopment of its campus more than 10 years ago. The modern hospital is connected by a glass bridge to the historic jail, which now serves as the hospital's administrative building. During the construction, strict guidelines were created in order to sustain the integrity of the building, making it a priority to preserve its history.
