What we’re about
This Meetup group is run by the Veg Society of DC (VSDC).
The Veg Society of DC hosts the events and pays the Meetup fee. You do not have to be a member of VSDC to participate in our events, but we encourage you to join. All of our events are vegan and we have a lot of fun! Membership enables you to enjoy members-only benefits like receiving discounts from our GreenRewards participating partners.
VSDC is a completely volunteer-run organization, with no paid staff. and is governed by an elected volunteer Board of Directors.
Founded in 1927, the Veg Society of the District of Columbia (VSDC) is the nation’s oldest continuously operating 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization promoting an all-plant diet and vegan lifestyle through education, community-building, and social activities throughout the DC metro area.
VSDC believes in treating all people, animals, and the planet with respect and kindness. We are committed to creating a more compassionate and caring world.
We do this by creating a community of like-minded people who are on the path to an all-plant diet and vegan lifestyle. Whoever you are, and wherever you are on this path, we offer resources and fellowship to support you. We make your journey easier, more enjoyable and meaningful.

VSDC Vegan Children's Playgroup New Year Celebration
Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library (Silver Spring Library), 900 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring, MD, USJoin Us for New Year Fun with the VSDC Vegan Children’s Playgroup!
Bring the whole family to welcome 2026 with an afternoon of creativity, connection, and fun. For this year's event, we’re excited to team up with Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM) as we celebrate the New Year with crafts, games, vegan-themed books, and delicious vegan refreshments.
While the event and the VSDC Children's Playgroup is all-vegan, our meetup welcomes veg (or veg-curious) kids under the age of 10 to be accompanied by at least one parent or caregiver.
The vision for this playgroup is to build community for veg kids to help instill more confidence in their lifestyle choices and provide a strong sense of belonging while also having fun. We also seek to provide support for parents/caretakers by sharing helpful tips, resources, and inspiration for vegan families.

Before attending this event, you must sign a liability waiver. Please use this link https://waiver.smartwaiver.com/w/b5nky2tonaovjqgjn6ap5p/web/
The chores you will be doing are physical. You will be working on big projects that require many volunteers like removing old bedding, sanitizing stals and replacing with new bedding, along with the daily clean up chores. Wear boots and clothing you don’t mind getting dirty.
Feel free to bring a filled water bottle. On sunny days a brimmed hat and sunglasses may be helpful. Sunscreen is also suggested.
Please do not bring any food or yummy-smelling items on your body or in your bag as our animals love to eat and are on special diets.
Out of respect for the animals, we do not allow any food with animal products to be consumed at Rosie’s Farm Sanctuary. Please ensure that all edible items are plant-based (no dairy, no cheese, no cow’s milk ice cream, no meat, no fish, no eggs). Thank you for your cooperation and respect for this. It is very important to us.
There is a gift shop where you can browse and warm up during the event.
Please post your pictures and tag Rosie’s Farm Sanctuary and VSDC! Stick around at the end for a group photo behind the barn.
If there is interest, we may go out to eat in one of our local vegan restaurants afterward.

VSDC Veganuary Hike: Burke Lake Park, VA. Easy 4.7 Mi
7115 Ox Rd, Fairfax Station, VA, USPlease join us for an easy walk around Fairfax County's Burke Lake Park. The 4.7 mile flat, paved trail offers lovely views of the lake and a quiet contemplative place to enjoy a leisurely social hike.
In honor of Veganuary, VSDC will be providing cookies and hot chocolate to share after the hike!
This hike is rated as easy based on flat terrain and minimal obstacles. We'll be sharing the trail with other hikers, runners and bicyclists and ask that folks walk two abreast, allowing others to pass so that we can "share the road".
Trail map: https://www.hikingupward.com/OVH/BurkeLake/
Transportation: We’ll meet in the parking lot off of the Burke Lake Mini Golf course. From Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA, turn into the entrance to the park on Burke Lake Park Road, then make a left at the Information Center. There is a $10 fee for non-Fairfax County residents on weekends (April - October only). If you can offer a ride, please post in the “comments” section with metro station or other accessible location for pick up. Carpooling is a great way to meet people and help the environment!
Dog friendly?: Yes. Please keep your dog leashed at all times.
Bathroom Facilities/Water: Located at the Information Center at the start of the hike, and at the Marina at the end of the hike. Please carry plenty of water!
Weather: If conditions pose a danger, we’ll cancel the hike and post a notice in the “comments” section. Be prepared! We suggest that hikers wear comfortable footwear and suitable clothing made from quick-dry, synthetic fabrics, as cotton can lead to uncomfortable blisters and life-threatening hypothermia in case of inclement weather.
*Please read The 10 Essentials of Hiking: https://americanhiking.org/resources/10essentials/ *
Pets: When hikes are organized in dog-friendly areas, hikers are invited to bring their pet(s). However, dogs are the sole responsibility of the owner(s) who brought them; should be up-to-date on their vaccinations & in possession of the relevant tags; and should be under the control of their owner(s) at all times. Dogs that demonstrate consistently aggressive or otherwise out-of-control behavior will be banned from future hikes. Owners should come prepared to dispose of their dogs’ waste in appropriate receptacles.
Alcohol/Smoking/Intoxicants: Use of intoxicants such as alcohol, cigarettes and/or illegal substances is banned during the hikes.
