We'll begin writing at 10:15, go for 45 minutes, take a 15 minute break, then go for another stretch of 45 minutes. Please share tables if you can, and absolutely leave the three tables nearest the counter free for other customers. If you're on the waitlist and didn't make it onto the RSVP list, I encourage you to assemble at The Castle Nordbanhof instead, our other venue. This way everyone interested can find a group to write with at this time. See you Wednesday!
IMPORTANT TO NOTE: We use the meetup page as a way to advertise our group, however, we do not pay attention to the RSVP function. **You don't have to RSVP to attend, but if it is your first time, do make sure you sign up to our mailing list (https://berlinwriterscircle.com/mailing-list) so you know which location we're meeting at this week and you get a copy of the text to be discussed and our discussion rubric. About the Berlin Writers' Circle Our meetings are attended by anywhere between 8 and 20 participants. We have a core of regulars and operate as a creative writing workshop. Each week we advance distribute the piece(s) that will be discussed at the next meeting. We meet weekly, alternating between two locations (m|a feine Kost and Laidak). Too often writers operate alone and do not have the opportunity to share their work with others. The Berlin Writers' Circle is an informal writing workshop modeled on U.S. Creative Writing programs and affiliated with the Brussels Writers' Circle. How does it work? Every week, one or two writers who have submitted a text in advance read their work (e.g. a short story, personal essay, or self-contained book chapter) to the group. Importantly, every submission is distributed to group members ahead of each meeting, and writers are asked to bring extra copies of their submissions to distribute. After taking a few minutes to consider the piece and develop a response, the group discusses the piece together. A facilitator guides the conversation to ensure that it remains focused on elements of craft. At the end of the session, the copies (with compliments, suggestions, constructive comments) are returned to the writers. Spirit We want to be supportive, encouraging, and create a safe and harmonious environment where everybody is comfortable. What can be read/ submitted? - short stories - personal essays / essays - creative nonfiction - novel/memoir chapters or excerpts (if useful to readers, please also provide a short summary and background, and specific questions you may have) - poems IMPORTANT TO NOTE: prose must be double line spaced, paginated, and in a classic, easy to read font (e.g. Times New Roman or Helvetica) EVEN MORE IMPORTANT TO NOTE: copyright for all texts submitted to the Berlin Writers' Circle belongs automatically to the author and all texts are protected by intellectual property law (this also goes for all previously submitted texts). Submission Guidelines We generally include a call for submissions, including instructions on how to submit and the date of the next available slot to be workshopped, in our weekly emails.
The first 45-minute writing period starts at 10:15 am (approximately), then we'll take a 15-20 minute break and do another 45-minute stretch of writing. Writers are encouraged to socialize during the break and afterward. We'll be in the back room(s), but on pleasant days we will likely spread out onto the back patio.
