Just War Theory originated with Catholic theologians like Augustin of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas and has had several forms over the ages. Some of the principles of Just War Theory include: Is it for a just cause, like self defense? Is it with the right intention, such as not assisting in regime change or re-election of a leader. Is it from a legitimate authority, like coming from the legitimate leaders of a community? Is it proportional, meaning superior to what could have happened if no war had been fought. Is it the last resort, meaning other reasonable options had been explored first.

"Just war theory provides the basis for exercising "ethical restraint" in war. Without restraint, philosopher Michael Ignatieff, argues there is no way to tell the difference between a "warrior" and a "barbarian."
