Metropolitan Walkers is the London walking community aimed at people of working age, and the largest Ramblers group in London.

If you've not walked with us before, you’re welcome to come along on three free walks before becoming a member, to see if Met Walkers is for you! Membership is around £43 per year, or £30 concessionary rate.
We’re a very active group. Our volunteers lead walks every weekend, ranging from short, leisurely walks to strenuous hikes of 17+ miles across hilly terrain. We also lead one evening stroll during the week, discovering different parts of the capital.
We explore the beautiful areas near London such as the North Downs, south coast and Chilterns, all of which are accessible by public transport.
A lot of our members walk regularly, which is a great way to form friendships. As well as walking, we have a regular social programme.
We regularly run weekends away to explore the other great walking areas the UK has to offer, such as the Lake District, Snowdonia and Scotland, and have also put on several trips abroad.
We’re part of the Ramblers – the charity that helps everyone, everywhere, enjoy walking; and protects the places we all love to walk.

1066 Country Walk Stage 1 (18 miles/Strenuous)

This walk is part of the 1066 Country Walk weekend away which can be found on the Weekends Away page of the Metropolitan Walkers website. This stage can also be done as a day walk, returning to London from Battle at the end of the walk.
Please note that while the length of this walk puts it into the strenuous category, its pace will be more akin to a moderate walk. Please respect the pace that the leader sets and do not push for more speed.
We start at Pevensey Castle, which was a Roman fort (built in AD 290), before William the Conqueror landed here to begin his invasion of England and built a fortress within the Roman defences. We’ll also pass Herstmonceux Castle, the Observatory Centre, Brown Bread Street, and Battle Abbey.
Please bring a packed lunch. There will be an afternoon pub stop for drinks, and a pub visit at the end.
Terrain: Undulating countryside paths
Travel: Take 8:54 from London Victoria (9:01 Clapham Junction, 9:10 East Croydon), arr. Pevensey and Westham 10:32.
If you are only joining for Saturday's walk, buy a single to Pevensey and Westham for the outbound journey and a further single for the return leg from Battle.
If you are staying on in Battle for Sunday's walk as well, buy a single to Pevensey and Westham only.
Grading: Strenuous.

Oxted-to-Lingfield: Vanguard! (12.2 miles/Moderate)

The walk kicks off by crossing a meadow to the nearby village of Limpsfield, where you can find a stained glass window honoring St Cecilia in St Peter's Church. This window pays tribute to the famous musicians laid to rest in the churchyard. We then make our way over the wooded Greensand Ridge; the rest of the walk takes you through the Low Weald, a gently undulating area dotted with charming old farmhouses and manor homes. The Weald used to be completely covered in forest, and one of the few remaining patches is Staffhurst Wood, a local nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest which the Surrey Wildlife Trust looks after. A lot of the trees in this ancient woodland were cut down in the 1930s, and it suffered more damage during World War II when it served as an ammunition dump. However, it has since been restored as a traditional ‘coppice with standards’ wood.
The afternoon part of the walk mainly goes across flat farmland, but there are a few low hills that provide surprisingly good views.
Lunch stop is the Grumpy Mole, a popular country inn which has an attractive garden with fine views across the Low Weald - but please bring a packed lunch.

Travel: Take 9:50 from Victoria (9:57 Clapham Junction, 10:10 East Croydon), arr. 10:31 Oxted.
Buy return to Lingfield.

Devil's Dyke Hilly (14 miles/Strenuous)
Hassocks Train Station - Southern Railway, Station Approach West, West Sussex, GBBrisk hilly walk over chalk downs and and pasture land, some steep climbs 950m total ascent.

Please note this walk was rescheduled from 30th April.
This walk will take us on a tour of a range of markets and foodie spots between Bermondsey and Elephant and Castle. In the 18th and 19th century, Bermondsey developed as an industrial centre, which was particularly known for tanning and leatherworking. During our walk, you might spot place names relating back to this history such as Tanner Street and Leathermarket Gardens. We’ll also pass through Borough Market, which has been based on its current site since 1756, and more modern areas such as Borough Yards, which opened in 2023. We’ll finish at Mercato Metropolitano, giving us a chance to visit before it closes in August 2026.
