Sobre nosotros

Welcome Savvy Readers!

*Join us as we get together about one Saturday a month to chat over our monthly book selection in a cafe or coffee shop setting (we mostly read fictional novels).

*Savvy Readers aims to be a positive, welcoming experience, and a place to have discussions with other readers in a respectful, enjoyable manner.*

*Attendee Cost:
We currently are trying a new voluntary pay model. If you wish to contribute, the suggested amount is sliding scale: $1–$2 for one meetup or $2–$6 for every 2–3 meetups you attend. The idea is that contributions are optional and meant to be modest :)
*A warm & special thank you to those who have contributed*
~Please note, contributions should not exceed $22 a year.
~You can pay via Venmo or Zelle. The organizer can share details at a meetup, or you can message me in the app for the info.
~You may also support the coffee shop meeting place with a menu purchase per your personal preference and budget.

Key Notes:

  • New members are always welcome!
  • We meet in Chicago, usually in the Loop or River North neighborhood, about one Saturday out of the month.
  • *It’s ok if you don’t finish the book each month! As long as you don’t mind spoilers, read or audio-listen to your preference, and feel free to join us for our discussion.
  • Of course, it's alright if you do not like a book. That said, please remain respectful in how you share your reading experience and perspective :)
  • ******Please note, as books contain a range of content, please explore and see book information for tone or content alerts based on your needs and preferences. Some readers find sites like Story Graph or other online sources helpful for visibility into topic considerations.******
  • Due to a limited number of seats available for each monthly meet up (~10-12 total), please watch for registration to (usually about 4-5 weeks prior to event), and reserve your spot via the Meet Up app under this group.
  • Audio listeners are welcome and encouraged!
  • Look for announcements on the next book selection and voting rounds, which are posted in the app.
  • Contact organizer Maria via direct message in this app with questions. I am always happy to chat, and would love to hear from you!

We hope to have you join us soon!
~Maria

*** CURSED DAUGHTERS by Okinyan Braithwaite ***

A young woman must shake off a family curse and the widely held belief that she is the reincarnation of her dead cousin in this wickedly funny, brilliantly perceptive novel about love, female rivalry, and superstition from the author of the smash hit My Sister, the Serial Killer (“A bombshell of a book… Sharp, explosive, hilarious’–New York Times)

When Ebun gives birth to her daughter, Eniiyi, on the day they bury her cousin Monife, there is no denying the startling resemblance between the child and the dead woman. So begins the belief, fostered and fanned by the entire family, that Eniiyi is the actual reincarnation of Monife, fated to follow in her footsteps in all ways, including that tragic end.

There is also the matter of the family curse: “No man will call your house his home. And if they try, they will not have peace…” which has been handed down from generation to generation, breaking hearts and causing three generations of abandoned Falodun women to live under the same roof.

When Eniiyi falls in love with the handsome boy she saves from drowning, she can no longer run from her family’s history. As several women in her family have done before, she ill-advisedly seeks answers in older, darker spiritual corners of Lagos, demanding solutions. Is she destined to live out the habitual story of love and heartbreak? Or can she break the pattern once and for all, not only avoiding the spiral that led Monife to her lonely death, but liberating herself from all the family secrets and unspoken traumas that have dogged her steps since before she could remember?

Cursed Daughters is a brilliant cocktail of modernity and superstition, vibrant humor and hard-won wisdom, romantic love and familial obligation. With it’s unforgettable cast of characters, it asks us what it means to be given a second chance and how to live both wisely and well with what we’ve been given.

    SAVVY MAY 2026
*** BROKEN COUNTRY by Clare Leslie Hall ***

Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

As Beth is pulled back into Gabriel’s life, tensions around the village rise and dangerous secrets and jealousies from the past resurface, this time with deadly consequences. Beth is forced to make a choice between the woman she once was, and the woman she has become.

A sweeping love story with the pace and twists of a thriller, Broken Country is a novel of simmering passion, impossible choices, and explosive consequences that toggles between the past and present to explore the far-reaching legacy of first love.
