If you like the type of walk that makes you deserve the afterwards beers (and what a cool place to drink them too!), this is definitely it. Today we're gonna embark on the ultimate visit to the largest wild forest inside the city's frontier. We'll be doing a comprenehsive 25 km walk that runs through absolutely ALL the cool spots in the area, most of them off the beaten path. An amazing full day out to check out the skyline, the sierra peaks in the horizon, the pretty Manzanares river, the wild deer and boar grazing and even the palace gardens. All to finish up in a super secluded place and enjoy cool beers before heading back to the metro!

EL PARDO FOREST

El Pardo are old royal hunting grounds which became protected by National Heritage and that's why one can see all sorts of animals such as deer, hares or wild hogs roaming around. Even imperial eagles fly by. El Pardo is also one of the main historical heritage hubs.

THE HIKE

We'll arrive to El Pardo from Moncloa, by bus, and come back from the ke Pitis metro station.

Álvaro will be waiting for you at the Cervecería Anpe, right out of the Pitis metro station exit. Calle Gloria Fuertes 181 (map above) at 10:30 (please be on time!)

Due to popular demand, we're repeating this trail through a very special place, the INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL town and surroundings of medieval Buitrago de Lozoya. We'll go over, through and under the ancient walls, pass by the main sites, like the Clock Tower, the Church of Santa María del Castillo (dated 1300's) or the Castle of the Mendoza family (also 1300's). Then we'll walk on to the beautiful surrounding forests to admire an astounding view from up top, of the whole river framed city (for extra instagram pleasure) and from there to the ruins of the Osuna Palace (1600's), later a a small Civil War bunker (1936) and a bit further away, another Civil War spot, with great views.

HOW TO GET THERE

• BY BUS: Take the 10:30 am bus #191 at underground Intercambiador Plaza Castilla. You'll be getting off at Buitrago de Lozoya main town center stop, it's called Bar el Espolón (ask the driver). Álvaro will be waiting for you there.

ATTENTION: Don't forget to bring coins and bills of 5€ max! AND Give yourself PLENTY of time to get to the bus and plan on being there at max 10:10. Remember metros run a lot less frequently on weekends. If you miss the bus it's bye bye hike, there's not another one :(

THE HIKE

Fantastic (and off the beaten path for the most part) hike from the birth of the Manzanares river, in Bola del Mundo peak (Puerto de Navacerrada) all the way to Manzanares el Real town along a beautiful array of secluded crystal clear natural pools, little waterfalls and VERY few people! It's a medium level hike but it's all downhill (except for the first hour), so not lung strenous! A full day out, not only because of the distance, but because we'll be stopping frequently due to the many beautiful rock pool spots to take a pic. Come prepared for a full day out there!

SPECS

• Distance: 19 km

• Duration (with all breaks): 7h approx

• Level: Medium. It's a LONG hike, with a first uphill part, from Puerto de Navacerrada to the peak of Bola del Mundo (aprox 1h). Then downhill the rest of the way. Terrain is easy. It's not hard in your lungs and legs, because it's not uphill for most of the way, and it's not super tiring because we'll be stopping frequently, but it will be long, so keep that in mind, don't expect a quick route :)

HOW TO GET THERE

• By BUS - Bring spare change, max 5€ bills and bring coins too! Make sure you're the latest 8:45 to secure a spot on the bus. It's the 9:00 am #691 bus from underground of the Intercambiador de Moncloa. Nivel 1 - Isla 2 Dársena 21. The stop to get off is Puerto de Navacerrada (remember, PUERTO de Navacerrada, NOT Navacerrada town!)

IMPORTANT NOTE! Every week someone misses the hike because they get to the bus too late. Plan to be there at least 15 minutes before the bus departure time and allow plenty of time, remember metros run a lot less frequently on weekend mornings and sometimes the bus stations can be a bit difficult to navigate!

WHAT TO BRING

• Comfy clothing, in layers (keep in mind it's high mountain and early morning, it will be chilly!)

• Walking shoes with an extra pair of socks in the bag, in case you get them wet

• Sunblock

• A hat/gloves if you get ussually cold
