- Group Guided Meditation at Dharma Bum TempleDharma Bum Temple, San Diego, CA
Meditation is an evidence-supported method for improving mental wellbeing, especially during and after times of crisis. Whether you're an experienced meditator or someone who actively avoids it, please join us in an accessible, simple guided meditation at the Dharma Bum Temple. (And whoever wants to have lunch together after, can. There are a bunch of places to eat nearby.)
The meditation leader will give a short intro, and then gently lead us in breathing together. Following a 20 minute-ish meditation, the guide will take questions. The guide may answer those questions from a humanist or a Buddhist perspective, and we are all welcome to leave or stay for that Q & A. Attendees will be: people who just want help focusing or feeling more centered; people who feel comfort in sitting with others; people who are in substance misuse recovery; and/or who are just curious. In short, anyone who wants to attend. Like you.
There is ample parking at the school admin parking lot across the street, it being a Saturday, and there is some street parking. People entering the temple are encouraged to remove their shoes, so please consider bringing socks for your comfort and temperature regulation. Also, the temple is a non-profit, so if you appreciate your experience and can swing it, please bring some cash for the box on the wall in the back.
The Dharma Bum Temple has nearby bus stops on the 1, 11, and 215 bus lines, and you can plan your route here. If you'd like to catch a ride with another attendee, please leave a comment below and hopefully a driver will volunteer.

Queen Of Knives is the sequel to King Of Knives. Every prominent person returns from the first film, including director Jon Delgado and screenwriters Gene Pope and Lindsay Joy. Is seeing the initial outing of the Benetto family a necessary prerequisite for this look into the complicated lives of this Brooklyn-based family?
Frank (Gene Pope) lives in a small apartment in his old stomping grounds after divorcing Kathy (Mel Harris). Their daughter Kaitlin (Roxi Pope) is trying her darnedest to work through her issues via therapy. She’s just petrified that her new partner, Mattie (Carmen LoBue), will meet her parents and sister and be scared off. Frank and Kathy’s other daughter, Sadie (Emily Bennett), deals with her emotions by never invoking them. Everything is a trifle or amusing to her, including random hook-ups with whom she refuses to eat breakfast. But Frank’s world, and therefore everyone else’s, goes pear-shaped when it is revealed who Kathy is now seeing: Frank’s account, Joanne (Tara Westwood).

- Sunday Assembly with Dr. Topher McDougalBankers Hill Club House (also known as San Diego Indoors Sports Club), San Diego, CA
Seeing in the Dark: Illicit trades & the Cultivation of Creativity in the Social Sciences
Many illicit trades are outlawed for good reason: they ruin lives and imperil sustainable economic development on massive scales. For that and other reasons, illicit traders and black marketeers often keep their activities in the dark. Dr. Topher McDougal, Professor in Economic Development & Peacebuilding at the Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego, will share and reflect critically on the various methods for detecting, quantifying, and characterizing clandestine economic activity that are covered in his new book project, Seeing in the Dark.
