A very popular guided walk and tour with Barrie **BATTERSEA .**....the new and the old This is more than the usual guided walk, this is an afternoon out as Barrie takes you on a journey from Vauxhall to Battersea Park and takes you through a modern history of an area that is about to become Londons newest and most vibrant destinations. Part one journeys along the riverside taking in the new American Embassy and other interesting sites and arrives at the regenerated Battersea power station where Barrie will tell you all about its history and the massive new development. Part two allows the group to wander, maybe have a snack or a coffee and take in the new Power station complex and immerse oneself in the brilliance of what has been accomplished in the amazing redevelopment of the area.....30 mins allowed.....maybe not enough !! Many say that "dating your own race" or "racial/ethnic preference" are natural choices - but history shows how many countries tried to *stop* different races from mixing: from racial purity laws in the US and Nazi Germany, to Saudi Arabia's current ban on marrying foreigners, apartheid in South Africa, segregation and eugenics, and bans on marrying someone from a different religion. While mixing was common in ancient empires and trade routes, race is now a common "filter" in apps and dating advice. Is this really just a matter of personal taste, or is there an element of prejudice and politics? We'll discuss: 1\. Is racial preference really natural \- and why have countries tried to prohibit different races\, ethnicities and religions mixing? 2\. Do modern dating ideas on race/ethnicity/culture carry political goals\, e\.g\. racial purity\, cultural conformism\, etc? 3\. Basically the walk is fairly flat with steps here and there, the surface is generally hard soil/grass/concrete/stone/tarmac/road/ etc. quite varied. Our first 'class cultural trip' was really fun so I'm carrying on the series and we're going to keep exploring the British Museum. The idea is we'll meet in the cafe at the British Museum, and then choose which part of the museum we want to explore. We'll walk around it, stopping to look at things we find interesting. I'll help you with the vocabulary you need to talk about what you can see. At the end we'll go back to the cafe to summarise what we've learnt and do a little vocabulary test to see what you can remember from your visit! If you are late, don't worry too much, because we will stay in the cafe until everyone has arrived and then start exploring the museum. I hope to make 'cultural visit classes' to museums/ exhibitions/ galleries into a regular event so let me know which places you are interested in. I plan to choose places that have free entry. I need a minimum of 2 students to run this Meetup. Maximum 5 students so everyone gets a good chance to speak.
